993 strange sound
Hi everyone! I hope you guys had a nice thanksgiving.
I'm having an issue when I start the car, after a few seconds it makes a screech metallic sound. It only does it when the car is cold (I'm in south Florida so not very cold.)
Once it warms up it doesn't do it. I've attached a video to this thread in hopes someone here can guide me in a right direction! It sounds like the starter but I'm not sure. It seems to come below the fan.
Thank you for your help!!

Could be a prelude to this.
I'd also vote fan bearing

You could tighten the belts to make sure it's not a loose belt. If it isn't then tightening will hasten above mentioned bearing failure.
That's what it sounds like to me too.

Hi Gabe,
Sound like the fan is clashing with the housing to me.
There are a few possible causes but it should be easy enough to diagnose step by step.
First, a visual inspection, is there any marks on the fan housing that indicate the fan is rubbing on the housing, while you are at it, are there any cracks in the fan blades, look at the gap between the blade fins and the housing to see if any are closer to the housing than others. If there is any of the above, replace the fan, a new fan will come with a new bearing.
Second, cable tie the belt sensor so it is away from the belt and start the car, if no noise then bingo, replace the belt sensor.
Third, remove the AC belt and start the car, if still there, the noise is not from the AC compressor.
Fourth, remove the alternator belt and start the car. And if still there remove the fan belt and try again.
If it is still there, then it is not the external rotary parts and could be more serious but it is most likely to be identified by this procedure.
Good luck and let us know what you find.
Cheers
Alan

Aussie Alan has a good plan.
Thats a horrendous noise, but its likely to be one of fan/bearing/sensor, which are all not a big deal to remedy. To be safe, I'd keep my head out of the vicinity of the engine compartment with it making those noises. If the bearing is bad and seizes, it can throw a belt or launch the belt into the fan, and make shrapnel of the fan.

thanks guys! the fan seems to be nice and free of any damage. Its just strange it does it only when cold. I tried taking 4 videos of the start up and by the 3rd video it didn't make any more noise at start up. It doesn't do it other than when its a cold start with at least 24 hours of it being off. Ill keep on eye on the belts, hopefully they just need to be tightened. The noise has been progressively getting worse in the past month.

I chased an odd screaching for a bit. Turned out the impeller on the back side of the alternator was broken, the rear disc seperated somehow. Cheap part but a pain to get to. If all others turn out to be ok, I would check that.

Also check to see if anything has fallen into the engine pulley area...a fastener you lost. Use some 14 ga solid house wiring bent into an L shape and slide it under the pulley and sideways.

To rule out that belt sensor, take it off and then start the car. Or "Carefully" disengage it from the belt NOT with a finger. See what happens. First method is safer, but much slower. If nothing changes, it's your fan bearing.
