Hey Armand,

Your going to have the time of your life.. And yes, it is addictive.
You should check with your insurance company first. Chances are, if your with State Farm or another big company, your car is insured at a Drivers ED.
Usually there are stipulations, No passing in the corners and without signals. No racing, no timing. If you get into a bang up, they will cover it.
Again, with MANY insurance companies you will be covered, check with your agent.
p.s. - it's a good chance that they will only cover you once for an on track DE accident. Than they will most likely drop you and you'll have to find another insurance company.

And although wrecks at a safe DE are very rare, they do happen..
I've seen a brand new S2000 in the wall, a couple Porsche's with bruises,
and other misc. cars that needed some serious body work.

There is also DE specific insurance that has recently become available. The company is American Collectors. A year's coverage is 1.5% of the agreed upon value of the car, with a 25% deductable. On a $40,000 car, that would be $600 a year, and max $30k payout. Not sure about personal injury coverage. www.americancollectors.com

No experience or affiliation, just looked into it a bit after I read the thread about USAA and DE's. It's worth the search. It's a real eye opener about what can happen....

Just to add to that.

In the past I have researched DE insurance. Make sure to read the fine print.
I remember reading that the car had to be moving and on the actual track at the time of the incident. In otherwords, lets just say hypothetically your sitting in the hot pits getting ready to go out on track. All of a sudden a car comes into the pits behind you and he hits his brakes. **Surprise** nothing but mush. His pedal goes to the floor but the car does not slow or stop... BANG right into the back of your 993. $10,000 in damage. You call the insurance company and tell them what happened.
They respond with.. "Sorry sir, the insurance is only valid on track with your car in motion. Our policy does not apply to cars parked in the hot pit or paddock."
The jerk in the car behind you doesn't have insurance on his car, it's a fast and furious honda that's been stripped and is not street legal. And, his parents don't know about it.

just some food for thought.

Just a clarification, I think the correct URL is:

http://www.americancollectorsins.com/

This insurance does interest me, does anyone know of any other companies that offer DE insurance? The 1.5% buy in doesn't seem too bad, but the 20% hit on payout seems a little high.

Cheers,

Does track insurance extend to driving to and from the track?

Cheers,

I agree with ApexL8 -- the 1.5% premium sounds reasonable, but the 25% deductible is absurd. I have USAA, and have been very happy until the DE insurance disappeared. I think it's time to call State Farm.

I think it State Farm varies from state to state. I asked in CA and they said they DO NOT cover it.

I'm with AAA. At least in CA, they said that any non race or non timed event is covered. I also have some first hand experience with another AAA member in CA who has filed and received money from a track indicent.

BOTTOM LINE, you need to talk to your insurance agent. All of our personal exepriences may/may not apply to your specific situation.

This is what I'm afraid of, being dropped, or told that I won't be covered for subsequent DEs. Thats why I'm leaning towards an insurance policy that is specifically for DE.

I was at Road Atlanta last weekend working at a BMW Club DE, 2 cars totaled out, about 4 more that required towing off track. It makes me think my number may come up one day.

Were the totaled cars all 3 Series? At there March event 4 cars were damaged, 3 of them pretty severely, and all were 3 Series? Is it the car or the drivers who buy them? Or is it just that 35 - 40% of the cars at BMW club events are 3 Series?

Anyway, non PCA events do tend to have more incidents.

TrackMan,
Both the cars that I was told were totaled were M3s. There was another M3 with pretty extensive body damage down the entire right side, but the driver kept using the car, so I assume it was still tracking straight. That third car belonged to an instructor, so these accidents don't only happen to novices.

I don't recall the specifics of the other cars that were towed off.

I don't want to blame the car or the driver, but like you said there is a big percentage of 3 Series cars out there, so just statistically they should make up a good portion of the incidents.

I have seen my fair share of Porsches towed off track, so they are not immune. The PCA does historically have less cars wrecked during it's events, but it is a mystery to me why. The BMW club even sent reps to a PCA DE to observe and see if they should do something different. BMW even went to a system (13/13 like SCCA?) where instructors are held accountable if their student crashes, even if they aren't in the car with them.

I've been working at PCA, BMWCCA, PBOC, and Club races steadily, plus the occasional HSR, SVRA, or VDCA event. I've seen too many cars towed off track, I get ill wacthing them pulled back in.

Maybe DE insurance isn't for everyone, but I'm considering it.

Best wishes to all, keep 'em shiny side up.

I highly recommend to NOT discuss DE's with your insurance company, especially if you have USAA. If it's State Farm, then you're more than likely OK since they've been known to support non-timed events, such as DE's. There is one company that advertises in Pano, specifically for track events, so you may want to look into that.

The only alternative is to look into track insurance which is not cheap.
