Default Front Glass/Windshield replacement

Hi,
My windshield is pitted and scratched, and I got a quote from Safelite Autoglass for $635 for a replacement.
They'd come to my home, or work, and replace it on site.
They have their own brand, apparently with the top tinting, and antena setup of the original ones.
I recently saw a guy doing a replacement, and he looked as if he knew what he was doing!
Does anyone have any experience with them? Good or bad feedbacks?
I read threads here people spending upwards of $1,500 for a front glass replacement. Am I missing anything?
Thanks!
Rodrigo.

I had mine replaced by the local Porsche dealer, and it was $1,500. That included new Porsche windshield and gasket. The actual installation was done by an installer (similar to Safelite), one they said they have used for many years (who knows). I chose this option because it cost me nothing extra, I paid only my deductible of $500, and I wanted genuine Porsche parts. An added benefit is having the dealer and Porsche stand behind it if something goes wrong.

I had Safelite replace the windshield on my 2000 Lexus RX300 for about $200 not long afterward, and it was entirely satisfactory.

I've heard mixed reviews from safelite. I've had them repair rock chips in my windshield with good results. I'm curious what others say. $635 seems like a great price!

This is one area on these cars where you are positively, absolutely not shopping on price. You need to find someone who knows 993s. Specifically.

Then you've got to inspect for corrosion damage once the glass has been extracted, and be ready to have someone competent ready to take that project on.

(Miss the 964-and-earlier days on the glass installs.)

Dude. Windshield replacement is 100% covered by insurance by law in florida. Just call your insurance company. The State requires they cover it.

I've been quoted low prices before only to find out the windshield wasn't available or they had picked the wrong one.

Pilkington is often oem in bmw. Thats typically a good choice as well as sekurit.
I'd be careful assuming that your insurance company owes 100% for the most expensive windshield. That is regulated state by state. The state also approves what your policy requires. In VA for example replacement parts must be like kind and quality. OE is not required by any policy or law here. Porsche doesnt make windshields any more than they make tires, wiper blades, spark plugs, 02 sensors, etc...

I checked last year and there was nothing available except OEM at around $1200 (hey its Canada). There were just no listings. Perhaps things have changed.

I've got some corrosion down in the channel and plan on removing/installing the glass myself as I can't bring myself to trust a glass shop to do it. I've got a drawing for the factory templates and plan to buy the 3M urethane and gun. I also plan to fabricate some small spacers to set in the channel to help align the glass when it's dropped in.

You definitely need to find someone that knows these cars and has the right tools. I couldn't find such a person local to me.

To share my experience for what it's worth with my OTHER CAR (Benz GLK). I replaced windshield twice using Safelite through my insurance, both times they came to me. The installation took about 30min.

After the first installation I noticed a bit more wind noise. It didn't bother me that much, but a year later I got two cracks, so had to replace again. I assumed that the glass they used was crap. So second time around I paid attention.

Second time around, the glass was Pilkington and made in Germany, which I believe is the OE glass supplier (my sunroof is the same brand). Their price is 700 for the glass and 200 for the install but through insurance it's 600 bux total, and I had to pay only 50 because I have glass coverage. The dealer quoted 1200 for glass, but I noticed their mark up is 50-100% so I assume it's the same glass.

The toughest part was taking the glass off as the guy had to cut though the adhesive and take some of it off. On GLK, it's relatively simple as the glass sits on flat surface after you remove the side frames (i.e. it's not in the groves like on the 993). I can see how with 993 it would be much more labor intensive to replace the glass and much easier to scratch the groves, which means rust in the future.

I've had the second replacement windshield for 2 years now and can't tell any difference from the car was new (noise level is back to what it was before the first replacement).

One thing to add, don't use Rain-X. Completely ruins the wipers and very hard to get rid of it.

I have heard that for simplicity, you can use the 964 glass and seal in place of the 993 glass and seal. Of course the seal will look a little different but the seal is also broader and should keep moisture out a little better..?

Has anyone here done this?

Is everyone happy with the safelite glass or is the OE Porsche glass worth the extra $500?
