About time for an introduction...

I've been on the forum for a couple months now, so it's about time I introduce myself. My name is David, and I'm from the Los Angeles area. My Porsche story begins about 18 months ago when a friend of mine offered to sell me his '66 Porsche 912 during one of my tech day parties (car buffs getting together to tinker on cars and socialize). It was an offer that literally fell into my lap and couldn't refuse....$1500 for a 912? SOLD!
The 912 was a long term garage stored car, So I took a few weeks to recondition the 912 into driving condition, and began just enjoying it (and tinkering/restoring it further) over the course of a year. Here's the 912 in question:

After about a year of ownership, I found that I really enjoyed the car, but would prefer a more modern iteration of the 911 to be representative of the Porsche marque in my meager collection. I also kept getting bugged by people who wanted to buy my 912 every time I took it out, which further tickled the idea in my brain for a 911 upgrade.
So I started doing the math, and figured that I might be able to leverage the 912 into a trade up to a 911. Originally, I figured that I would be able to get into an 80's SC or G50 911, and ruled out the 993 as being unattainable...but then this '96 993 came up in my search. It had a few issues (mostly the kind which would scare off the timid), but otherwise the car was very solid and in great shape. The odo had just clicked over 100k, too.
At that point, everything just kinda clicked into place. I put up the 912 for sale and it sold in a matter of hours to the first person who looked at it, and less than 48 hours later, I used the proceeds from the 912 sale to buy the 993. I addressed the issues brought up by the PPI for ~$1K total.
I've had my 993 for three months now, and have addressed most of the issues that the car had when I purchased it. After doing the math, the total outlay I have from having nothing to ending up with my 993 is around $10K and a lot of elbow grease. Not bad...

Future plans are generally reductionist in nature. I'll be eliminating unnecessary stuff, adding some lightness (I have a penchant for lightweight cars), and bolstering the car's strengths. Other than that, I'll just enjoy it.

Awesome story, welcome to the fold!
We had a 68 912 many years ago, was my wife's car, I really miss that car.
It looks like you are near many of us in the South Bay. (1st pic looks like somewhere in Pedro)
Nice car! Love arena red!

-Wouldn't pass smog (tested as a gross polluter)
-CEL light
-Sunroof liner was mostly detached and hanging inside the passenger cabin
-Aftermarket wheels
-Slight steering wheel shudder between 50-60mph
-A big ding on the fender
I was able to take care of the CEL and smog issues during the PPI/maintenance phase. The shudder was fixed with a fresh wheel balance...I swapped the wheels to MY02's anyway. The ding was fixed by PDR (for free), and I got the sunroof liner repaired at a local upholstery shop.

That was a sweet 912!! However we do what we must to get into what we ultimately want. I do miss my 82 SC at times but it only takes a brief glance at the 993 to dispel that.
