Mike had some good advise. I was not able to turn my engine with out the belts slipping so i found 8 that were loose and off cam the first effort. Keep a map of what you have changed ...very important. Next i removed my dme relay so the engine would not start and gave the key a quick turn. No oil squirted out. The other 4 could then be changed. It may take a few cranks if you are not as lucky. Make sure they are wiggling and off cam before you remove them. My seals were hard and cracked so it took a hard pull with pliars to get the old ones out. The new ones oiled were a hard push with a clean rag using my palm. They pop into place just before you want to give up. Hope that helps.

Quick question, I typically hear a ticking sound when my engine is running. Would this probably be my problem?

Depends on the "ticking" - that is not specific. 911 engine are very mechanical sounding by nature, and you can hear the valve train working. On some cars, its very quiet, others a bit noisier, but when a lifter fails, its NOISY. Its a very large clacking sound that you think the engine is going to blow.

So, how loud is the ticking?

Have you listened to other 993's to compare?

Cheers,

Mike

The engine does not sound like it is going to blow, but there is a constant ticking sound that is fairly loud and distinct from the other engine sounds. Not many 993s in my neck of the woods to compare or listen to.

Well, changing them certainly is not going to hurt anything - other than take time and some $$ - so go for it!

I am almost guarantee you will find disintegrated O rings.....

Cheers,

Mike

Just trying to confirm the part number before I order. I have a '95 C2. I believe the correct part number for the hydraulic valve lifter is 993 105 141 05.

Someone quoted the part number as 993 105 141 03 - I believe this is for the turbo valve lifter. Thanks.

993 105 141 05 is for all n/a 993
993 105 141 03 is for M64.60 ie turbo

There also are other part #s for different lifter sizes but you won't need these unless your head have been machined and valve height changed.

BTW be sure to shop around. I found some on fleabay (UK) for a fraction of what they cost here. Even with freight forwarding fees I saved enough to take my lovely wife out for a nice dinner.
