I'm always excited when something 'new' is published on our 'old' cars
...call it an impulse buy

"I looked at the 996 manual reviews on Amazon, looks mixed as per depth. It would be nice to see more of the manual inside before considering dropping"
Right, Bentley's known for errors and who wrote it (hopefully Adrian - have all 4, 911SC, 964, 993, 996)? Typical Bentley: Buy/rent the car and tear it apart, take notes & pics, write it up
and then reassemble it for sale or return it to the rental company.
Besides, when it's fully available, Amazon will most likely have it for the now intro price,
i.e. <$150.

If I'm doing some work on the car, especially a larger project, I like to have more than one reference; Rennlist, Pelican and a workshop manual combined are nice to have at your fingertips.
I pre-ordered one for the $70 savings.

Then here's one on Amazon for $70;

The Bentley is more specific than Adrian's. I haven't found his book all that useful really... Good luck finding a Bentley manual at a steep discount. Even used, ppl don't give them away. The best I could find was like $20 savings for my two volume set I purchased for a DD I had years ago. I sold my old ones for the same price I bought them for.
The diagrams and specs they list are helpful. It's handy to have in the garage rather than posting / waiting or sifting through Rennlist searches which can take a long time. Plus half our technical forum is cluttered w non technical crap making it even harder to weed through.

Kinda O.K., but still very limited. For any real key info, e.g. wiring, one needs
the actual Porsche shop manuals which one can occasionally find for $300 to
$400.

Of all the aftermarket shop/repair manuals, I've found the Bentley manuals the most detailed. I've never owned one, but I have gone through them. We sold them at the VW dealerships I used to work for. Chilton, Clymer or Haynes don't even come close.
And they all contain errors, even factory manuals. The bad advice I came across in a Haynes manual cost me a bit; I should have followed my instinct instead.
The best manuals I own are those from Toyota and Honda. They know how to write a manual.
I hope that Bentley manual has wiring diagrams in color.

Jager, I've actually used Bentley manuals on my E30s and friend's VW. It's a good company, local here in MA, too. I'm glad they put out a manual for 993. just more than a bit surprised it took them so long, They are usually much faster with these things.
To me, a lot of the decision whether to buy this book would hinge on quality of wiring diagrams. Even though I do have the OEM volume/binder of wiring diagrams already.

Would like to clarify what CalvinC4s posted re the internal door guard: "... the example page on removing the door handle skips that whole PITA plastic guard on the inside."
The plastic guard does not have to come off to get the door handle and lock cylinder off.
If you do ever need to take the guard off, a couple small screws and done. Not at all a PITA, super easy. At least it was for the few times I have done it. You would need to take it off to replace the door latch (lock) assembly.
Btw, there is also another guard in there that covers the door lock actuator.
