Why is it thought that this looks good? Honest question.

It's a fair question. I do think it looks good - have you noticed the Singer interiors do the same? But I recognize that opinions on looks are subjective. I'm also doing it because it fits into my weight savings scheme. And I want to open up the interior.

I have gone down the same road. I prefer the spartan look over the cheesy 80s/ 90s interior of the 993.

I don't know that I would call the original interior cheesy, but it is confused. The upper dash design dates back to the 1960s, but Porsche obviously felt that the 964/993 interiors needed a more modern look to remain relevant. Personally I don't think they pulled it off, probably because of design budget constraints. Not that I care, because like you I prefer a simpler look anyway.

I tend to like the interior of the older cars. The whole center console carpet/plastic combo is just too basement carpeted rec room for me.

Now with everything out I can see how all the mechanisms work and fit together. I like the quasi-industrial look too.

That said, my interior is a loud environment (Fister IIIs!!!! shout out to Darin!)but it does not bug me because as a drummer I am used to metallic, obnoxious sound.

It is cool to know some other people are going the same route I am.

Cheers,
Michael

Do you happen to have a photo of your interior available? I like to see what others are doing.

I will snap a few. I still need to do some welding on the center console. So what I send is incomplete.

Mine is still a work in progress as well.
The center console and lower dash are gone. So is the radio.
Next to go will be the rear seats.
I will keep the carpets though, but change them to an old german weave style, much like the 356s have.
Car is in the shop now, waiting for Stage IIIs to come back from Darin. Next step body shop. The ducktail is screaming on my garage, and other adjustments are to be made.

In case anyone is embarrassed to share their mess, here is what mine looks like now. Actually I'm proud of the results. I managed to get all the glue and foam out except for a thin layer on the insulation strips between the seats - neither a heat gun nor solvent works there so I am having to scrape it off by hand and it is slow going. I still need to re-tape the harnesses, got the new Tesa tape yesterday. And I have yet to find a place to weld the assorted holes shut but will be talking to a couple of people later today. I have a bunch of other updates that I hope to have in place over the next several weeks, and am very excited to watch this coming together.

Weight wise? According to my spreadsheet I should be able to get about 420 lbs out without getting too crazy. I don't know exactly what it was when I started though, so maybe 2750 or so, hopefully less.

Jarg....Looking good so far!! Did you relocate the radio? If not those speaker assemblies in the door panels and the rear can go.

The speakers, amp, CD changer and radio are all gone. The RS door panels are perforated in case I ever decide to add something back in. Right now the car is so loud that a radio wouldn't be useful anyway. I'm having the rear deck re-covered without seat belt or speaker cutouts.
