The first Porsche I drove was back in college. I didn’t own it (I was a poor student with lots of college loans) but I had a friend that let me drive his 1974 911 one entire summer while he was away.
I drove it from Sears Point Raceway to Raleigh in two days once. Quite a bit over the speed limit, I admit (assuming the statute of limitations protects me, if not – then I must have gotten caught in a time warp, officer).
Somewhere in Texas I pulled over and slept in the driver’s seat – it was that comfortable.
After many years, I recently bought a 993 and it brought back a flood of memories. The 1996 Porsche sounds like, drives like, and has a nearly identical dashboard to the 1974 Porsche.
I find myself now driving long trips for no good reason. If I can figure out a way to pry the grin off my face I’ll try.

Hello, the first Porsche I drove was on the wrong side of the road with my best 'anorak' friend in UK. It was a 993 artic silver back in 1999. We used microphone to record the sound of the exhaust trhoughout tunnels and we put the sound back into the 'windows 'software. When the PC started, we then heared the magic sound !!
By the way I am flying tomorow to SPAIN to hopefully bring back a superb 993 Rivieria Blue Cab of 1995...
I am discreet and let you know asap if two 993 will now sleep in our garage...
This passion of Porsche came from my English mate... and apparently this is not calming down...

The first one was a 1961 S90 bought in '73. Paid $500 for it. Drove the crap out of it for a couple of years and sold it for $750 needing a valve job and a carb. I bought the carb but, never put it on. It is still on the shelf in the shop!
First 993 I drove was last month when I bought the '97 cab.

This brings me back to 1998 when I bought my 70 914 in Winnipeg and drove it back to Quebec. Did the -6 conversion several year later with a 2.2. After driving J. Dunkle's Webered 3.0 914-6 I had to do the same. Next year found a 3.0 in VT and swapped the engines. Bought the 993 cab and sold the 914-6. While I love my 993, I got to confess that I miss the -6 alot.

I was 13. My sister's boyfriend was 25 and he had just purchased a 1978 targa. He told my brother and me to get ready we were going to go do some "man ****." He took us out to the car and said "...you are going to learn how to drive a stick tonight." He took us to an abandoned race track and put the car through its paces...acceleration runs, high speed braking, cornering, figure eights, etc. I was enthralled and enraptured...like getting to 3rd base for the first time, i.e., un-f'ing-believable! 3 hours later I was still breathless. You do something like that to a 13 year old boy and it creates an indelible impression. I learned to drive a stick on a 911...and it became my dream car. 20 odd some years later I bought my 993. My first and only.

'67 (I think) 912. Sepia Brown. Targa. Thousand Oaks or Calabasas, somewhere around there...
I had seen an ad at work and after calling and chatting with the owner I seriously considered buying it. They let me take it for a day to check it out, and take it to a shop.
Can't remember the miles or number of owners but it was very clean. Perfect interior, top worked as it should, not a ding anywhere. I think the asking price was $8,700.
This was 1992 and I just couldn't wrap my head around owning a 25 year old car as my everything car. Unfortunately, there was no Rennlist at the time.
I bought a new Honda Civic Si (EG6) instead. Great car, of course, but for a lot of reasons I really wish I'd bought that old p-car.

In 1957 I had a new VW and my boss asked me to swap cars so he could take some folks to lunch. His car was a 1952 356 convertible. Had bad clutch chatter, Fu Man Chu bumpers and a long, long gearshift. I loved the car and we'd sometime swap for weeks at a time.

In 1973 I worked at a gas station in Tiburon, CA. A customer had us change the oil on his 356, and I delivered it to his house. I owned a VW Bug at the time and always thought that Porsches weren't that different. Wrong again. Glad that guy trusted us with his car.

My family took a vacation to Hawaii in 1998 and my brother and I rented a mid-80s 911 cab for the day. The rental company told us it was Charles Barkley's preferred car when he is in town. In retrospect I think it was a late 70s SC with the roof cut off and a Ruf spoiler added out back, but it didn't matter..we had the time of our lives and beat the hell out of that car. Seven years later I autocrossed a fellow Rennlister's 993 and posted the top time of the day. Bought mine a few months later...

1969 911E Targa, dark green with black interior. Didn't buy it; thought it was too extravagant.
