Someday I may very well be in your camp. After 7 years and 122k miles (60k of them my own), I have no intention of "upgrading" or trading for something else. That I did a total engine rebuild recently only underscores my commitment to this amazing car.
The engine tray is still on and it has been since day 1. I love the Porsche philosophy of "form follows function". They made their reputation building cars for endurance racing. I have faith in their engineers. They know that the cars they sell are mostly going to be driven in urban locations with lots of stop and go driving. I don't believe that they would have come up with an engine tray design that would impede adequate engine cooling under these conditions. I never have had the car overheat. More than once I've been stuck on I95 in the DC area, on sweltering days, in stop and go traffic for hours. For the last 9 years I've been in the Phila area with it's hazy, hot and humid summers, and again, never had the car overheat. From my anecdotal experience I would conclude that the engine tray does no harm and in fact may contribute positively to the car's performance at speed.
