New car and a question
Well, after several months of looking I finally got the car I was looking for. It's an ocean blue 97 C2S. It seems to be in great shape and I plan on using it for my DD.
I have been lurking on this forum for several months, and have found the advice very helpful. The question that I have, and forgive me if it is a dumb one, is, "do I need to replace the rear stone guards?" They were off the car when I bought it. I assume he PO removed them because they had yellowed. The car looks great without them and I would like to leave them off, but don't want the paint to get trashed.

Welcome and congrats on the purchase.
By looking at the condition of mine...YES you need them esp for a DD car with WB. I would also put clear bra on the front bumper. Mine has tons of chips after 70k miles and they are white. Generally I'm against clear bras on cars, but with car so low to the ground we are not talking about 2-3 chips, it gets pretty beat up.

Hi
My car does not have them. The PO drove the car almost exclusively on the motorway. I must have 1,000 small chips each side where they should be. When it gets paint they will be going on!

Get the ones from FD, the 3M material they use is clear, 14mil and very minimal orange peel. I put these on my brother's yellow C4S and looks great!
I just recently installed the OEM ones bought via Pelican on my black TT. Wouldn't recommend, the orange peel appearance is dramatically more vs FDs. I'll prob change them out next year.
Don't bother with anything below factory thickness IMO, when they took mine off some chips even went thru the factory guards. Major impact in that area.

I'd give the paint at least a month to cure prior to applying the stone guards. If you ever had to remove them and the painr didn't cure adequately, there's a good chance you'll be pulling paint off your car.

NO (someone needs to put up a contrary opinion
I had a major issue removing my original ones that resulted in a repainted on one Q panel. Still have the stone guards but haven't put them on and it's been a couple of months. No chips so far. I am sure they will come but you get way more chips on the front and elsewhere so only option to prevent them is to bra the car!
I really like the clean look. No wax marks around the film (my car is black) and if it gets really dinged up can always respray as many do with the hood

How does the problem in removing the OEM stone guards have anything to do with the application and overall protection stone guards provide to the haunches of the 993?
hint: if you dont like the wax buildup around the edges, an ultra soft bristled tooth brush makes quick work of any residual wax.
Hmmm, apply stone guards and not worry about chipped haunches, or have them resprayed every couple of years for abuot $2 G's. You do the math.

My statements are not contradictory as they have nothing to do with each other. I just like the look of the car without the guards as I said. Was just recounting the story of how I came to that conclusion
My repaint was about $200 for one panel so do the math for 2. Not that difficult. I actually did the math and it works for me. It's a personal thing and if you like the guards knock yourself out
PS ANY brush no matter how soft will mar the paint so you need to correct the paint again and rewax. Repeat ad nauseam
