Default OBD II Reader: Bosch Hammer vs Durametric vs Bergvill/RL vs generic

A search for OBD II readers on the 993 board gave results a few years old or more. I am wondering what the functional differences are between the Hammer, Durametric, and Bergville, vs a generic type found at Princess Auto, etc. Which would you get for 993, and why, and does it also work for non-Porsche OBD II applications? Please advise. Where is this RL developed ODB reader code?

The generic OBD scanners/software can normally only connect to the engine management, and not the other OBD-enabled units in the Porsche 964/993. Generic tools probably also cannot connect to all functions available in the engine management.
As far as I know, there's only a handful of systems that can do all the units in our cars. (Motronic, ABS, air bag, alarm and climate control)
*The Bosch Porsche "hammer" (KTS 301)or later Bosch Porsche tools as PST2, KTS500 or PIWIS
*Freeware Rennlist Scantool Windows software (serial port adapter, as my T-OBD)
*Durametric Windows software with a proper serial cable
*928-diag/PDT999 from jenniskens

I've gathered all needed software for Scantool and this can be downloaded on my product page.

I guess you can buy license for other car types for the Durametric, this could maybe be a tool for more of your cars.

Cheers,
Tore

Good Q. I confirmed that 928-diag/PDT999 from jenniskens can cycle the ABS pump like the factory Porsche tools.

I presume you mean the C4 ABS brake bleeding cycle? No, Scantool supposedly does not do this. I'm no expert on the Scantool features, but belive I have seen several discussions on this before. Try a search, especially in th 964 forum.
Cheers,
Tore

Tore - thanks for clarifying. This confirms that I need to go with jennikins to get the features I need.
