Default Brake pads n spiders n $'s ?

Can someone please post a picture of a 993 brake spider, that half of you guys recommend to leave out when changing pads?

Is a spider what is aka a vibe dampner?

Does $420 for pads on all 4 corners (less shoes for E brake) + sensors, + vibration dampners, sound like a good price for Textar pads?

If not, recommendations please for where to purchase?

Thank you gentlemen

In the UK that lot would cost you £240 or about $360.00 so $420 isnt a bargain!

Call sunset Porsche in Oregon and get oem pads. Otherwise they are probably going to squeal.

I learned the hard way. I first bought Pagid "OEM formula" pads, then Mintex and finally porsche OEM from sunset. Porsche OEMs are the only ones that don't squeal like crazy.

The spiders are the circular vibration dampers that stick to the backing plate of the pad. I left them out and with porsche OEMs, no squealing.

I've done some searches, read articles and watched a few videos about changing break pads. Is swapping out pads an easy DIY and about how long does it take?

If you're worried about squeeking, go with Porsche oem. I went with aftermarket on my first 993 with no spiders, and had no squeeking at all.

Brake pad DIY is a very easy job. I've done a few of these pad changes. First timers may take 45-60 min per wheel including jacking and wheel removal. If you ditch the spiders, changing pads becomes a snap!

Yes. Depends, once you have done it a few times (Track swap for example), can be done in under 10min a wheel. First time, take your time, look around the wheel well and admire the great German Engineering, plan on 1/2 a weekend day.

If you start "cleaning", then you will be there all day. It is amazing what you see with the car off the ground, wheels off, and sitting on the ground.

This and an oil change is a great way to learn about your car.

Very very true. Once you pull a wheel off you cant help but start cleaning. I can change pads in 20 minutes but i lose another 30 degreasing and polishing.

I always use the spiders on my pads to reduce squeal.
I also nearly ALWAYS but my stuff from Tom or Bev Gould @ TCs garage in Vista

Great people, Great service, fair prices.

Bev is the current SDR PCA president.

Cheers

Craig

Craig,
Thank you for the photo...A picture is really worth a thousand words.

I read quite a few threads on recommendations for brake pads for 993 and the concensus was Textar or Porsche OEM; unless you're tracking, DE'g, or AX'g regularly.

BTW, the quote of $420 was from Sunset, which is why I was pulsing the crowd

When comparing pad pricing, is a set considered two pads for each caliper, or 4 pads for two calipers? (i.e,; two fronts calipers)

Mark,
Those OEM Textar pads are not the same compound as the OE pads. One squeaks and the other doesn't!

The rears come as a set of 4, the fronts are a set of 2. So you need 2 front and 1 rear.
