Had time to sort this over the past few days with a lot of driving in different conditions. Ambient temps have been right about 80 degrees. Oil thermostat is working fine. My fan kicked on low just over the 9 o'clock position shown in pic below and just as described in the DIY on p-car. Temp lowered a bit from there but during slow driving and a lot of idling it will raise just above the 9o'clock and never goes higher. I'd like it to run a bit cooler but based on everything I've read I'd say its pretty consistent with normal operation. I'm feeling better now.

What oil (brand and viscosity) are you running?
