Big day today - picking up '98 4S
Love the car, never thought I would end up owning this model. Can't believe it's 15 years old. This car must have been so ahead of its time.
I saw a few 991s today as they are popping up everywhere and I love the new design, but IMO, 993 WB actually looks better...and it's so rare. I'm very glad I found WB and ponied up for it. Is it really only 2.4 inches wider?
Duly noted
A few questions:
1) When you upshift at high RPMs, do you just shift in gear and drop the clutch or do you give it a moment for revs to fall down a bit? I haven't driven stick car for the past 4 years, and my last car had responsiveness of a sponge. 993 is hard to shift smoothly at higher rpms from 1st to 2nd, wonder if I'm doing something wrong. I'm amazed tho that I was able to get in and drive very easily.
2) Can I just take off the front bumper guards and replace the amber blinkers with Euro ones? I assume I should have no fitment problems with Euro turn signals since I would take the bumper guards off, correct?
3) What do you attach the floor mats to? I see they have little plastic clips that should tie to something? Anybody using WeatherTech ones? What would they attach to?
4) Is oil the gauge really that useless? Mine is barely on red most of the time. This got me worried so I stopped and checked the stick, the oil was at about half. I guess I will add a bit, once I find 15W50.
5) So figured how to keep the wing up, but after you restart the car it get back to the "up and down" mode. Is there way to keep it up even after re-start?
6) What's the consensus on repainting the front bumper? Mine has quite a few chips as the car was driven mostly on highways during it's life. I wish I could repaint the whole car with the same paint of my Benz. It's 4 years old and no micro scratches. The paint quality of 993 is not that great (15 years old, I get it).
7) How do you keep your driving license with this car?
Some very subjective observations:
- The ride is not as harsh as I thought at first. My other car is small SUV (MB GLK). The problem with SUV is that while they are cushy, they sway quite a bit on bad roads. 993 is firm but very very well planted. Mine has H&R coilovers.
- After the first 50 miles my back was hurting (more specifically my tailbone). I saw somebody else had similar complain. However, I played with seat adjustments for a bit and next 50 mile trip was fine.
- Brake pedal is very firm with very little travel, but it seems the car can stop on a dime. I have yet to REALLY test them.
- Cornering is a similar story, on the roads I drive on, I simply don't need to use brakes anymore, just turn the wheel and keep going...simply amazing...and I maybe pushed it to 3/10.
- The noise of the engine is great, not just exhaust but they whole thing. Made me reconsider getting aftermarket exhaust.
- I love the small size of the car, I feel like I can zip through any opening in traffic. But I do feel a bit silly next all SUVs and big sedans.
Once I can take a break from driving this thing, I will go snap a few shots I promise.
2. No unfortunately you can't. The bumperettes expose holes in the bumper. You can either swap in a euro turbo bumper or get the gaps filled at a body shop and then have the bumper resprayed.
3. The should be a clip on the seat rail that they attach to. Mine are missing as well so I need to order a pair.
4. Yup it is. The only time it's accurate is after the engine has warmed up and your sitting there idling on level ground.
5. Why would you want to keep it up? Looks kind of silly with the wing up and the car stopped.
6. See #2, get a euro turbo bumper and kill two birds with one stone.
Congrats!!!
Double clutch when going from 1st to 2nd. Save your syncro.
4) Is oil the gauge really that useless? Mine is barely on red most of the time. This got me worried so I stopped and checked the stick, the oil was at about half. I guess I will add a bit, once I find 15W50.
Its a dry sump engine. Your oil level is fine. The level gauge is suppose to be sitting on the red marker or just above after running car for 10+ minutes with hot oil on level ground. DO NOT OVERFILL

FWIW, I have been told there were only 237 or 238 C4S's imported to the US in 1998. keep it, drive it, take care of it.
