1997 993 check engine light
I was driving in 3rd gear about 20 mph and the check engine light came on but the car runs fine and everything is working. How do I get the light to go off? Is there a button?

Get the code read
Most (some?) auto parts stores will read your check engine light (CEL) codes for free. I've had codes read recently by O'Reilly auto parts and AutoZone. Or if you are more comfortable, have a dealer read it.
Then let us know what you find out.

How's your gas cap? Easy one to check off first.

hahaha! I want to see a picture of the CEL light too :P
I have a Scanguage 2 which I mainly use on my mini as it's a Canadian car living in the US and BMW doesn't put MPH on the speedo for lots of their Canadian products (not sure about their latest, but the older ones don't).. the rest of the world gets both.. I never understood why its different for Canada AND with most of the population living at the boarder I bet at least 75% of the cars drive into the US at least once in their lives..
anyways it will give you lots of telemetry across everything OBD2 spits out in a gauge, scans codes and lets you clear codes. Good investment if you plan on driving a car and want to know whats going on - I lend it to friends all the time and its paid for itself in beer
phil.

You will need to have the OBDII code read (you could buy a reader) or have a mechanic do it and have the CEL turned off. Based on how and when it happened you will probably get the P1411 code which will make some say you have an SAI issue. Since the car was warmed up and it happened in this way (the engine lugging a bit) I've been told it's not SAI as the CEL didn't come on when started cold. I'd love to hear why this scenario will throw a code, however, if anyone can hazard a guess.

the SAI codes P1411/P0410 and I noticed that the CEL could come on while
driving rather than right after startup. Actually it would do both, I've had it
come on 3 times before I finally cleared it for good, or at least until it clogs
up again. But one time it came on about 15 minutes later while I was driving.
Evidently the ECU has to do some thinking about the situation and may not
immediately set the CEL after a cold start.
The Actron CP9550 is a cheap code reader ($58 at Amazon) you can get
to read and reset the codes.

3rd gear and 20mph might be the problem Just kidding, although at 20mph you should probably be in 2nd if not 1st gear. I like to keep the rpm's up high. Have it scanned and see what it says.
