Default How To Remove Sunroof Headliner

I want to take out the sunroof headliner snap-on piece to recover it. Can anyone tell me the best approach to take it out once I have unsnapped it from the sunroof mechanism?

I always gravitate to the most dumb-a$$ way of removing stuff and usually break things. Please help me not mangle this piece!

I did this several years ago to re-glue an edge and can't remember much other than it comes out through the roof (Not into the interior) and that it is a royal PITA to do. I did it while replacing the sunroof felt and even with the metal sunroof panel out I had to bend/bow the liner to get it out the opening. Putting it back in without damaging the liner was tedious as well. Other threads I read on the subject indicated that my problems getting it out and in were typical.

If you have unsnapped it from the sunroof mechanism I would do the following:
- disengage the sunroof motor from the cables (done by unzipping the headliner at the back and removing the motor, 2 screws). This makes the sunroof easier to move.
- while holding the headliner slide the sunroof towards the back. the headliner will come out inside the car.
Note that there are two (one on each side) long black clip like things on the edge of the headliner that allow it to slide in the sunroof track, try not to break or bend those.

Hope that helps.

Here is what i did:

-Slide sunroof open (little bit)
-unclip panel from front of sunroof and slide al the way back
-close sunroof
-Now you can see the bolts that hold the roof to the car, undoo these
-Remove metal sunroof
-slide back trim panel (forward..)
-unbdo the Philips head screws that hold the deflector etc.

You shoul be able to remove the trim panel now without damaging it.

On this forum you can find some more pictures or if you have access to the workshop manual of a 3.2 carrera you will find the procedure as well.

Michael, if you do go the route of removing the sunroof itself (instead of just the headliner) the sunroof is lifted out from the top once unbolted from the cables. I would get an extra pair of hands to help with that as it is a pain to remove and the paint is easily damaged. I like Gert-Jan's approach and will try that the next time I need to repair the sunroof.
