Sweet car. I think I've seen it before in NJ a couple years back. The wheels made it memorable. Naturally I'd refinish them back to regular stock, but that's just bc they are my all time fav wheels on any car lol

Not hard, and no. Removal of the mufflers to get to the lower spark plugs, do the leakdown, replace mufflers.

Call me the valve guide skeptic, but I view the SAI port cleanout just a kicking the can "repair." However, if the car is what you want, you'll search hard and long for either better or slightly cheaper.

Ken my man, you know more about these cars than I could ever know, but I kinda disagree with you on this one, for one simple reason: passing smog.

Yes, often times there may be a correlation between clogged SAI ports and deteriorating valve guides, but if you can't pass smog because of a CEL light, the few bucks it takes to clean out the SAI and pass smog is a much more palatable fix than a expensive valve guide replacement. I may be another 30K-70K miles away from having to do a top-end to replace those ****ty valve guides, so that's a very nice long kick of the can

Do a PPI. When I bought my 4S from a great seller, they disclosed a replainted quarter panel that he did not know about. However, not a deal breaker because it was well done. For the rest, I got confirmation that this is a great car. 250 usd well spent

Being an ex (and future....again??) shop owner, I just come from the side of having to deal with customer and future owners. For awhile I made part of my living on doing more-or-less half *** rebuilds to keep 2.7L's not leaking and going down the road. Paid for law school. But those were in the days of $2500 "rebuilds" to keep a ~$7K car on the road, versus today's repair/car value equation on a 993. Further here, a 993 of top desirability/value.

Fully aware how to extract money from a customer to fix immediate problems. Would I recommend similar on a M96 engined Porsche? Or Cayenne? Hell no. Kick, kick, kick, whip, and completely abuse until they reach the wrecking yard. Just as we did with the front engined cars when they were past warranty. (Some did it with 914s, but I always had a soft spot for even the lowliest 1.7L tail shifter.)

So when I see a relatively low mileage/high value 911 that won't be depreciating to zero NOT being comprehensively repaired, I call it kicking the can. Back to the shop owner thing--while I would fully explain all options to a customer, and if a cleanout job were the direction he wanted to go, I'd point him in the direction of another shop. But I'm funny that way.

Based on all recommendations here, I scheduled full PPI with compression and leakdown tests.

Worst part is that the shop is booked for a week and then I am away for a few days. If PPI checks out, I'll go straight from the airport to pick up the car.

Please make sure that PPI examines tires, for tread depth/life left, and more importantly date codes that reveal tires age. My PPI did not and car arrived with 7 year old rears and 8 year old fronts; ergo a lost opportunity to negotiate the price of a set of new tires off of the purchase price.

Tires looked very fresh, believe they were put on last year, but checking them was on the check list. Good point on the manufacturing date. My Mercedes dealer said that tirerack tires sometimes can be in warehouse for very long time. Might be BS, so they justify their mark up.

Just found this thread.

I had seen this car at SN and it looked very nice. Now I understand what happened to the Turbo.

Good choice re PPI. Mike at Bodymotion will do a thorough PPI.

If you need some help, just give me a shout.

Mark

Thanks guys, I'm sure I will have more questions once the PPI is done. I've been in contact with Ace at BodyMotion.
