How can you tell if your shocks are bad?

I read this post with interest because I have often wondered what tells you -- really informs you in a technical sense, not seat of the pants test -- that the shocks have actually worn out (not just, "well, they're done" because they are old). From a knowledge-based trouble-shooting point of view, it is discomforting that the most "technical" answer to how-do-you-know-when-your-shocks-are-done question is "by this age, well, they are." I'm not disputing the conclusion, it just would be nice to know that there was a way to, well, know...
And, given that I don't love the ride of my Konis and m033s, I'm guessing maybe they are done. I'll have to check my records and see how long ago the PO installed them. Might be time soon to put the car up on the lift and put in some of Lemon's pss10s....

So what you all are implying is that, at 130k on OE Monroes, I'll very likely enjoy the experience new shocks will offer. Heh.
Time to steal from the retirement fund I guess -- I'll enjoy it more now than when I'm old and decrepit, no?

Another way is to find another 993 with the same setup/age, but with upgraded/newer shocks, and go for a drive. If you do not feel a difference, then leave it.
. Other than use a shock tester or take the shocks off the car, its hard to tell other than driving characteristics.
As far at 130,000miles, just about any shock would be worn by then, and the Monroes are likely only acting as a suspension strut with no damping. But if you drive, it and you like it, who is to say replace them? Unfortunately, you might think differently on those rare occasions, like accident avoidance, where a sharp input to the steering/brakes unsettles the car, and the recover is not quite as good.
Cheers,
Mike
