Also, a chip, exhaust, and some suspension mods does not a sleeper make. In any car.

sleeper can mean different things...My Cayman looks pretty much stock from the outside (different OEM wheels and a little lower) but save for the completely different exhaust, no one would expect it to beat 997 S's up the front strait at Road America....but it does and a few of those 997S owners referred to it as a sleeper.

a porsche 911 is not a sleeper.
A forest green 1972 dodge dart with chrome trim and hubcaps, but with a twin turbo stroked LSX and full exhaust is a sleeper. A debaged S600 mercedes without the sport package, S430 wheels, and an ECU tune is a sleeper.
A 993 with an exhaust and PSS10s is in no way a sleeper.

completely agree.
Many people here know the difference between the Porsche animals but to the general public all are fast and none are sleepers.
A chipped, debadged Audi avant (wagon) is a sleeper IMHO. So is the Dodge Dart described above.

This is the real deal. Of course, even at idle at 10 feet, she'd be a dead giveaway:

I have a chip tuned SL600. (600hp/700TQ) It looks like an old man's car (I'm an old man!). It says V12 on the sides (If you notice), but it says nothing about also being twin turbo-charged. The AMG SL65 says V12 biturbo on the sides and trunk lid. Pretty close to sleeper status

My favorite sleeper story is from the late 1990's when Paul Newman had a Ford 5.0 V8 stuffed into a Volvo 960. He was quoted as saying "I tell ya, from 20 to a hundred you can chew anybody's ***."
Here is a more in-depth discussion of the story.

Here is the allroad I built 2 years ago. Might classify as a "sleeper". I don't really classify any 911 a sleeper..
Fairly stock outside. Built 2.8TT with 500AWHP

I agree that it would take a lot of engine and stealth to make a 911 a sleeper. Like blow your socks off fast but without the big tail, wide body and graphics.
Best sleeper I ever saw was a Jeep ****** at Pomona. It had 35" mud tires, a winch and roll cage so it looked like a typical off road mudder. It had a built 454 under the hood and after an impressive (although useless) 4 wheel burnout it ran low 11's in the 1/4. No one saw that coming.
Sleepers need to appear benign but then SURPRISE!

993's beauty by definition cannot be a sleeper. It's impossible to slip under a radar with one of the best looking cars of all times.
The only P-Car that I could see being a sleeper would be a brown or beatup looking 924. Anything else is just going to garner too much attention.
