Ultimate Street Engine

ITB's - $7k plus
Bottom end improvements - Oiling, Rods, Crank etc.
Custom Pistons, Heavier Valve springs and the list goes on and on.

Not sure where you come up with $30-$35K. Heads/cams are $10K. Pistons cylinders are $5K. Assuming you have the right ECU, it's $1K (or whatever) for the flash. Then 200 cell cats or cat bypasses, which are cheap. What's all the fuss about?
#19
Call me for some ideas as we've built & dyno'ed quite a number of 3.6. 3.8 & 3.9 litre engines in a variety of configurations making anywhere from 300 to 435 BHP. There is a LOT more to this than meets the eye.

But you don't need an "ECU system" -- you just need a flashable ECU, like the one used on '97 993's. Plus, the 9M heads come fully assembled, and you can sell your old heads, pistons and cylinders, so factor out machining costs and factor in sale of old parts.

P & C's $5000
What about Gaskets $~600, Main Bearings ~$1200, Rod Bearings ~$250, Rods / Rod Bolts ~ $1750, Case Machining ~$750,
So with all the above you are already at ~$21,500 in parts. Of course we still haven't dealt with ECU, Intake, Headers and Exhaust plust anything else that may be required based on the OP's 175000 mile engine (and at that mileage a lot extra would need to be done)
And the thing that everyone forgets is shipping, I am already at around $1000 in shipping. My engine case alone was $200 to ship down and Back for machining, same for heads etc.
If anyone can build an engine like his for $15,000 in parts I will write a check tomorrow.

"Then of course you need an aftermarket ECU to get all the benefit of the uprgades factor in $5k for a Motec plus another $2k for tuning."
That's exactly 'right on'! No Mickey Mouse re-flash of the DME ECM will provide the proper setup
once all the MAJOR engine mods are done.
"But you don't need an "ECU system" -- you just need a flashable ECU, like the one used on '97 993's"
Don't think so! And where will you get an ECM system which will emulate the Bosch
DME ECM to facilitate the dyno tuning process prior to the actual re-flash of the
original Bosch DME ECM.

Trophy, I'm just talking about the price of parts above what a basic rebuild would cost. The complete assembled heads/cams are $10K from 9M; pricing has been posted in previous threads. And what case machining is needed for a 993? Or shipping charges to rebuild heads? 9M uses stock intake, so no extra spending there, and there's no need to buy headers -- only thing needed is higher-flowing cats or bypass pipes. Again, not seeing what all the fuss is about. $15K is nothing to sneeze at to be sure. But seems like a good deal to me when you compare it to a proper supercharger setup or the factory RS parts.

As I said, If you can rebuild with 9m Heads, 3.82 P&C's for $15k in parts, I will write a Check.
To use the 3.82l P&C's (103mm pistons) you need to Machine a stock case from 107mm cylinder case bore to 109mm.
AS for shipping Heads, was giving an example of what my shipping costs have been (I shipped my heads to Steve W for rebuild and shipping was about $75 each way). If you buy the 9m heads shipping from the UK will be at least $250.
I am rebuilding my engine at the moment and not going with 9M heads and will be more than 15k in parts. (and I get a deal on a bunch of stuff)

1st decide what engine management you will use, that determines everything else
for street use torque is king, it's hard to beat displacement + vram in that arena.
w/ a reflashed Motronic, 102mm RSR p/c's, RS cams & vram is a nice package especially w/ regeared trans
If you spend a lot more money then you move into a different realm, w/ Motec or similar you can build a much more powerful motor, but you have to extend the rev range to do it. These motors are certainly streetable but are much happier on a track.

That is pretty much my thinking. If I go 3.8,it will be simple P@C's,cams and valves. I want to stick with a 97 ECU.

Here's that 340 BHP, 3.6 with our custom intake & exhaust. Very mild cams, stock pistons and basically a stock bottom end (ARP rod bolts with good bearings).

I think we will be talking in the near future.

Never said what you're claiming I said! Obviously, there are many costs involved in an engine rebuild beyond the 9M parts in question.
What I did say, and what remains 100% true, is that the cost of the 9M heads/cams/p's & c's is about $15K.
Here it is (from a 2010 post) by the head of 9M himself:
At today's exchange rate, FWIW, that's $14,707.22
