Regular or Premium Gas for 993?

There's only a few reasons to use regular gas in a 993 since the manufacturer recommends premium.
*You're cheap.
*You're stupid.
*You think it's OK to do so. If so, read the firs two reasons above.
Therefore, I'd keep it to myself if I were putting regular gas instead of premium into my 993

Ive been using regular and have no knocking, no pinging or anything that would indicate Im using the wrong fuel type.
My car is OBD1, could that be why its more compatible w less octane fuels?
I put some Redline fuel injector cleaner once a year just to be on the safe side

I use 98 simply because it gives my car a bit more pep. It's more expensive than premium.
If I was worried about the cost of running a Porsche I would not have bought a Porsche...

Premium gas will deliver a slightly higher mpg I guess, but to better that even more I use diesel. Have been doing that for about 6 months and haven't had one issue since.

I have been to the Huntington Beach Car Wash, you have to pay inside.
I have never run a full tank, at most 3/4 on top of premium. Mileage will increase and the motor definitely seems happier.
There is the psychological effect to of putting race gas in your car, in that you tend to want to, well, maximize your investment, shall we say?

Conversely, gasoline with higher octane ratings have lower energy density. Said another way, you reduce theoretical efficiency and performance limits when consuming fuels with higher octane ratings.
This fact is irrespective of engine tuning parameters (compression, timing), fuel additive packages and the potential for catastrophic damage from pre-ignition if using too low an octane rating for the application.
993s are fitted with knock sensors and engine management logic coded to adapt to those circumstances within a range.
For these reasons, blindly spending extra for higher octane fuel is counter-productive at best, and using regular grade fuels doesn't necessarily qualify one as cheap or stupid.
Porsche recommends a minimum octane rating to best suit the specific operating environment of a stock 993 in average environmental conditions. Whether that represents the best choice for your car, where and how you drive it, is another matter.
The 'safe' answer is to follow the manufacturer's guideline, but understanding why that was their standard will help you make better decisions when you face unique circumstances like reduced selection, extreme elevations or increased performance demands.
