I am having a problem fitting a new long oil filter.
The old one came off easily enough, but i can't get the new one started on the thread.
Any help appreciated.
Just got back from the shop. I knew I had an M20 x 1.5 Dormer tap that I once used to clean threads in my BMW motorcycle swing arm. Same thread as our oil filters.
I'm using a Mahle filter and i will try the new small Mahle filter.
The one that came off is a Porsche one but it doesn't screw on easily either!
Indications are that the housing thread could be a bit damaged - does any one know the size and thread pitch, i may need to get run a die to clean the thread?

M20 x 1.5
Get an adjustable die if you can and start loose.
And don't reef them on and stretch the threads...they won't fall off.

Huh? I just went through this same process several nights ago. You have to make sure you are perfectly straight-on when you begin screwing the filter or else the thread won't begin to catch. Hope that helps.
Tried the small filter on - it fits fine, so i know the filter body threads are ok.
So I will buy a new Porsche long filter and very carefully screw it in.
Incidentally, could a small filter be used in place of the large one?
I've seem something similar on an older 911. The threads of the filter were left on the housing threads. I was able remove the filter threads with a dental pick. Strange how that happens.
