I am technically new to the board. I'd like to get pinned too. Would you mind if I join? Should I bring anything?

About how long does it take to pin one car? If it is an hour, we could be at the upper limit of how many can be done in a reasonable day, but I have no experience with this. I suspect as we get some experience it will go a bit faster.

We have plenty of pins, so that is not a problem.

Marc can chime in, but as I understand it, for those that want, can meet at C&C, for those of us that need our beauty rest or have tax apps, will meet at Marc's. I plan to be at Marc's around 9am.

You can do these in about 45 mins/per, I'd guess, as long as the owner sticks to drilling when the car is on the lift. That would include on-off time.

Don't think you're going to drill these with cordless drills, it takes some power. We used my 1/2" corded drill with a handle at the neck, as you want both arms working the drill and keeping the bit straight in the bore. You go through some material, and there is a need to periodically bring the bit out so it can expel the rubber bits in the center of the tie rod.

Everyone at our deal got to experience the fun of drilling their rods!

It would be nice to have an option to pilot drill these holes as it would be faster and wear less on the larger bits. But Peter did not design his tool to take a pilot. Maybe with the next mod?

Yes, I own a strong corded drill with neck handle (see pic below) so we should be good. Thanks for the heads up Ed.

I also bought a few extra HSS bits and a cobalt bit. We can always try the Cobalt bit as they tend to last longer than HSS, but they have to be drilled at half speed. If someone has an extra drill, it might be a good idea to have a spare just in case. In total I have 6 bits, which I hope will get us through the day. If anyone has extra 5/16" HSS (high-speed steel) bits that are sharp, please bring them.

I can add BeauBlues and callipygian 911 to the list and one person dropped out. But I think we should honor this list in the order it was put together. However, if someone is not available when their turn comes up, we'll just have to skip over them so as to not waste time and to be fair to all.

The other thing I can do is just try to get through as many cars as possible. If we need to, I can always extend the tie rod pinning to include another day. Perhaps next Sat (2/23)?

So all are welcome to visit, but if you're low on the list, we may not get to you. But at least we'll have a chance to meet everyone. That should be fun.

As this list has grown, it might be nice if we had a few volunteers to get the beer and chips. The pizza place will deliver so there's no problem there.

The list is as follows:

DIY'ers:
1. mgianzero - that's me of course.
2. f8vr993
3. Kika
4. C4SJOHN
5. Schubee
6. civerson4 (Chad)
7. gonzilla
8. eddie_993
9. BeauBlues
10. callipygian 911

Observers:
1. TheBen
2. mcipseric
3. Ed Hughes
4. chaoscreature
5. Chris Walrod?

I can help with beer. Can you pm address, or we can work on meeting at C&C? I may not make that, however-I've been on a travel binge of late.

The thing on the pilot holes is we were worried about hitting the same angle after removing the jig to swap holes. I suppose a drop-in bushing for the pilot could work-clamp the jig on once for both sizes.

I'll also need a PM for the address. What time should we show up to C & C?

Guys, I just pinned my tie rods. Took me 20 minutes from beginning to end. Very simple job on my lift. So I think we'll have no problem doing all the cars.

For those of you who can't make it, let me know and maybe we can do some more cars next Sat (2/23).

Doing your one car, focused, is certainly a 20 min project. But, get a bunch of guys and cars around, and the 45 min average will probably prevail.
