Looks like my previous owner installed a new SAI valve (Denso).
Both ends of the the SAI aee clean!
I was expecting the bottom side of the SAI being somewhat dirty.
So it appears that the ports are clogged enough that there is no exhaust coming up from the exhaust port although in theory no exhaust gas should travel toward the SAI valve.
My code is P1411.
I will have to plan to clean the ports sometime if I want the most efficient performance.
I drove about 3K miles from Seattle via Davis, CA to KC averaging 80 to 90 mph and occasionally around 100 mph in the desert area. I got about 25 mpg with 91 Oct gas.
I got my first p1411 at about 5K miles after I bought the car. So I cleared it. Now I got it after about 2K miles again.
I removed on the mufflers and cleaned them and the bolts and nuts came off without trouble. I am concerned about removing the heat exchangers. I have seen people braking the bolts and nuts of the heat exchangers on YouTube. I hope mine don't break.
Make sure the little vacuum tube back by the valve is in place. That valve looks VERY clean - so it may be as easy as making sure the vacuum line is in place. it WILL throw that code if it's not plugged in. I did the whole clean out a couple years ago and knocked that line off and was throwing the same code- plugged it back in and it's been good for 2 years.
PRSWILL,
Thank you for your tip.
I got a borescope today so I should be able to check out the status of the vacuum line and other items in the back.
I will keep you updated.
Two things- the little vacuum line is RIGHT by the valve- you can easily access it when you remove the air-box. The cables- just get a standard brake cable and maybe 4 feet- the passages arent' that long. After you remove the heat exchangers, the openings to the ports are behind each valve- another good indicator is how clean the valve guides are- if there's little build up of carbon and / oil, chances are the ports are clean(er).
Is your car burning oil? if you're consuming a quart every thousand miles, you probably have an issue with the ports too. This is only my guess- but i've read a lot about this. if you're not burining oil or its less than a quart every 3-4000 miles, it could be the SAI pump, the vacuum lines or the valve- but your valve looks good. Good luck. this is not a hard fix- just time consuming and messy!
Use a lot of penetrating oil on the exchanger bolts. Mine came off easily. I did break a bolt on the exhaust that was really welded in- but it hasn't been an issue.
Thank you.
Everyone here has been very helpful.
I drove about 6K and added a quart. I think a pint leaked out of the fill cap when I drove this road with tight curves and small hills (2 miles) near my house. Fun little drive. I doubled up the rubber oil cap gasket and it stopped the leak (almost).
My borescope came so I will check all vacuum lines in the back, the blower and the valve (actuated by a vacuum line) just above the SAI check valve.
I have read a lot of articles and threads here. There was a post about how to check the blower and the valve. I have to search again.
I went through this for a while this spring and summer on the 1998 993 C2
. I did the vacuum valve and SAI valve, still got code. I read something about changing the driver side upstream and downstream oxy sensors, so I did that. 3 trips 1,500 miles later still no CEL. My fingers are crossed this took care of it.
Here's a photo of really bad SAI cut open for your viewing pleasure. Original with 81,000 miles.
If I need to clean the exhaust ports, how long should my snake (bicycle brake cable) be?
I HAVE DONE THIS I used air craft cable - like Picture hanging Wire - its 12 wires tightly woven together OR ABOUT 1/8TH OF AN INCH THICK
Pics n Procedure r posted here https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...ns-help-2.html
read it all or skip to Post 29 to the end
Good Pics of tools and wire sizes needed

PS My Oil consumption was 1400 and after I went over 2100 Miles per litre.
My Leekdowns were within spec
I suspect its 3,000 Plus Miles per Litre consumption
And that is AFTER 100,000+ miles on Top End
Remember Oil Level should only be Half way Up the dip stick <> Do not overfill Oil <> No Higher than Half
Recently had a shop roto-rooter the SAI ports on my '97, and apparently was unable to clear a couple of the ports. It was done at a very well respected air-cooled shop in Denver, but they didn't suggest any next steps since they didn't see any evidence of major cause for the SAI CEL. Any suggestions on next steps that won't break the bank?
Try the drive at the top of this thread. It's a drive I and others with faulty SAI systems have used to pass emissions legally, without spending a cent. It's something that '97's are uniquely able to do. If you don't have an ODB scanner, pick one up and give it a try. It'll take about 1 hour.
Recently was told Colorado may be allowing people to request a tail-pipe test on vehicles older than 10yrs old...so that may be a nice loophole for the time being.
