Slippery slope question re exhaust mods
I notice exhaust mods are fairly popular after suspension.
I'm just wondering, do sports cats (100 or 200 cell) and better exhausts such as the RSR, add horsepower? Or is the main aim a better sound?
Also, do you get a more free running and responsive throttle?

The main expression to muffler mods is of the audible kind. Porsche AG did a good job with the 3.6 exhaust from performance aspects. Mine's had what's refered to as the LMPP modification, its where a short section of 2.25" dia pipe is welded in the exhaust pathway - very much a short curcuit at the muffler. Its an inexpensive, fun DIY which adds the much needed burble, crackle and pop to the exhaust note. Pleasent enough for me, however the 993s exhaust note isn't on my Top Ten List of mod's.
Killer brakes, now that's my thing.

As others have said, most mods to the 993 exhaust are purely for "show" as opposed to "go." FWIW, before seeing Darin, my favorite "non driving" aspect of my car was looking at it. Now, it's listening to it And I only opted for the Stage IIs!

Agreed on no real power gain, but my Dansk 100 cell split flow cats and RSR muffs save about 40 lbs from the back of the car, that's gotta be good for something And the sound... "it's real and it's spectacular".

I'm very happy with my new Fister stage II's.

Race Car
I have the schizophrenic option: did the LPMM mod and love it. Then a buddy gave me a steal on some Fabspeed Supercups. I use the supercups mainly for the track, although they are spending more and more street time on the car as they sound unbelievable. I put the quiet muffs on when I get tired of the loudness.
That's the beauty of exhaust mods: easily reversible. If you do something you hate, someone will work a trade with you.
I've heard Fister stage 2 and I'd go that route if I was to pick one system...

I have FD sport cats and stage II's. It's a loud combo when I get on it but I cruise into the neighborhood easy and no one has complained. There is a noticeable difference in low end torque with the new sport cats. When I roll onto A1A in 2nd gear at 2K RPM and step on it, I get the car sideways every time. I couldn't do that before. Did the HP increase? Don't know. Less weight make a difference? I doubt it. Am I having more fun driving? Absolutely.

Cars with 4 wheels and a larger tire contact patch may require somewhat more. Shedding unsprung weight or rotating mass is very desireable from a performance aspect.
