Default Fabspeed Cat Bypass received and installation tips

1995 Bischoff OBD I exhaust:

Make sure you have PB blaster, Gloves (got scratches where I should have had gloves) good assortment of tools. Proper jack stands correctly postioned. Eye protection. It's all at your own risk.

I got my bypass on the door step yesterday. My very first impression was "wow this box is light it cant be all of it!" It IS all of it! Big difference in weight.
After work I opened the box and saw a bunch of shiney goodies! It seems to be well designed and thought out.

Assuming your rear tray is removed move on to removing the tail pipes, bolts on the header flange and the band clamps on the mufflers.
The upper header flange Bolt might take an odd combination of wobble extensions to get them off. I broke one bolt but none had to be cut or torched on the exhaust. The 5 heat sheild bolts will be holding it in last.
I put a bolt back in the headers to keep it from falling on me. The 6.5mm nuts on the front came right off. The rear heat sheild bolts I had to chisel off mainly because I couldnt get to them and there was just a clip holding them. Now if you carefully remove your safety bolt you can lower it. Next you throw a nut bolt washer and gasket in one hand and get one side of the x pipe in place.

Then the other side. Makes sure your gasket is aligned before putting the rest of the bolts in place.
Now you fit the bypass pipes (or cats if you got that option. You'll want to fit everything before doing the major tighten down.

Once everything is cinched up fire it up and it sounds great. With stock or motor sound mufflers in my case it's not too loud at all. This is a good time to polish the stainless exhaust tips before you reinstall. I'm getting to that this evening and then I'll back it out and give it a real run. I have fired it up with out the tips and it's not loud. It sounds like I expect a 911 to sound but it's not race car loud. The mufflers are still doing a good job keeping it quiet and thats with it lifted int he air 1.5 feet. I will say it has a bit stronger exhaust smell now. Probably doesnt help I fired it up in the garage. I'm glad to get rid of the heat and back pressure as well as the weight on the back of the car.

That was quick bro! I thought you were getting the sport cats, not the bypass? Looking forward to hearing it!

Yeah Chris we'll catch up so you can hear it. you probably want the sport cats on your cab. I just went full bypass. Compared to the worn out cat this must flow much better. It pulled so hard it felt like I supercharged it. Any low end torque issues were not a problem for me. I asked my wife about the noise and she said it wasn't louder but wasn't as deep a rumble. She didn't seem annoyed with the noise which is good.

If it passed the wife-o-meter, that's a good thing. I'm thinking sport cats+OEM mufflers might be the ticket for me...

Richmond Cars and Coffee is back in the west end for the 15th. So maybe I 'll see you then if we dont catch up before. If you drive it the difference in power will sell you on it. The reduced heat and back pressure will just be an added benefit. I need to upgrade the motor mounts and shifter next.

Looks good Hks, very nicely done and thanks for the great feedback. Now you can always add or remove sport cats if you need to. Enjoy it and let me know if you ever need anything else .
Thanks,

I guess I'm going green these days: I would've gone with sport cats on a street car. I've had some comments of people following my old 911, about the fumes, and seen similar reports of 993's here on RL, to purposely go catless.

Default I have this combo...

Fabspeed X pipes, their 200 cell sport cats and stock 993 mufflers. I needed to keep the sound at 92 dB or less. I passed sound and I passed California emissions with this set up. I'd love to have a slightly louder set up...but that dB meter at Laguna Seca is brutal. You fail sound, they give you a couple of trys to fix the issue, if you flunk again, you get sent home.

No better customer service than Alex and Joe at FabSpeed...that has been my experience.

The x pipe full bypass with stock mufflers is very quiet. I'd be surprised if it were over 100 db. No emmisions tests here and I daily drive a new honda so I'm not polluting

Smile It's a good sound...

And I passed 92dB sound with this set up...it is loud enough so I can hear my rev ups for down shifts. The sound is far from "very quiet".

Martin do you convert to the catless set up on the track ever? I thought it was very quiet compared to the x pipe and super cups that I was thinking about and are too loud to use on the street.

Do you find the sport cats lower the sound that much? I'd be curious since it's so easy to swap if you or someone knew the actual dB sound delta between the sport cats and the catless Xpipe. Did you ever upload a video?

Thanks

Thanks for the write up! I too have a 95 OBD1 and am considering the Fabspeed cat bypass. Did you reattach your lone oxygen sensor? If so, any check engine light issues? I have the Fabspeed mufflers and like the idea of the combined weight savings and free(er) flowing exhaust. I live in Vermont, so no emissions testing. I do visit Limerock, the Glen and Circuit Mont Tremblant for track days during the summer and don't want to run afoul of their sound limits. Based on your post and some of the others, it sounds (pardon) like the bypass doesn't increase the decibels too much? Michael
