A few days ago I drank a wonderful Quivera '07 Zinfindel. I also owned about twelve Volkswagens from 1955. Nothing later than 1967. Was so in love with the sound of those four cylinders I bought a 912E and put over 200,000 miles on it. Now I have the 993 and I love it! Four plus two. Not bad at all!

Zinfindels are big wines. The grapes get so ripe in Cali that our wines have high alcohol contents and big fruit flavors. Let the wine breath for an hour or so to cool it off a bit.
I like Martinelli Zins from the Russin River area
+1 on Martinelli. Great place to hang out and taste wines as well.

I drink Zin by the bottle.

Seriously which ones have you tried? And of course, wine is like cars, women, etc. we each have own taste.

Tried a few from NorCal and Paso Robles Zins that assorted friends recommended. It's just always too bold for me. I take a sip and SMACK!

For calibration sake, my everyday red lately is Washington State Cab (Ste. Michelle) readily available for $15 a bottle or so.

So there you go Mike...Ste. Michelle is way too smooth for me...growing up in Norcal you get use to a lot of tannin etc in wine...the bigger the better...one thing with big wines is you need to let them breath a hour or three before they really open up. Anyway it's all good...wine is very personal and if you find what like go with it...just like Porsches.

I agree, Bob.

Just for my own curiosity, could you recommend a good but less bold Zin to try? Something that could be easily bought on East Coast.

What's to ponder, I celebrate my decision with a bottle of Silver Oak every chance I get!

With 993 cars you get the 911 Darwin-ism. Not so much with the 996/997 and even less with the 991.

Pretty mainstream the new models, 981 and 991

I really like Girard Old Vine Zinfandel Napa Valley....very refined for a Zin...
well at least to me...not sure it can easily be found on the East Coast.

You can go here and enter the wine followed by your Zip...it shows stores in the Boston area but that does not mean it is in stock.

http://www.girardwinery.com/winefinder

Also find a good wine store in the area...go when their not busy and tell them what you are looking for...price range, smoother etc. If it is a good shop they can give you some suggestions. But they are going to have to have at least 15-30 selections of Zin to get close.

I mean at what point will they simply be considered old?

With three generations of water-cooled cars out there are some decidedly cool iterations of them as well. 996GT3, 997 RS 3.8 and 4.0, the Speedster...okay...maybe not the Speedster....

I guess the point I'm making is that...well...I'm not sure what point I'm making.

Not that it matters, as we'll all enjoy what we will enjoy, but there you go. Discuss if you like.
I always say if you are unsure...then do not move on the decision...go out and buy a newer car

my only slight regret is now a 2004 GT3 is getting close to the price i paid for my 993 '98 C4S .. and man.. i looooovveeeee the 2004 GT3 in the right color combination. So, in great fashion what i have decided, is that i need both. i wouldnt buy just a normal 911 from after 1998...

silver oak - yes.

If Zins are too big, drink Pinot Noirs!

Big difference in sugar levels between grapes grown in Washington State and NorCal = big difference in alcohol level and boldness
