...not as cool as a 73 914 but a soon-to-be-extra-cool (I hope) 88 924s with a factory super cool M030 suspension, which handles way cooler than my 96 993cab. The only thing cooler than that is the 993 with the roof down after a nice spring rain!

Mot sure how I missed the start of this thread...oh yea...I was in Sonoma hanging out with my sons...so a Napa Cab today is much like a 996/997/991...there good (some are still wow and I am talking about Napa Cabs or Porsches) but most have been refined to accommodate the masses...I would rather have a Mauritson Rockpile Ridge Zinfandel then ALMOST any Napa Cab...much more limited in production (which is part of the appeal) and less refined but still gets to the heart of the matter.

I fit this description perfectly! I was a teenager when the 993 was out and there's no way I would dream of owning one.

A doctor down the street had one and he knew every time he passed my house I was looking out the window as you could hear him coming.

Now its mine....all mine!

I went from this to my current 98 C4S!

Cam and Eddie nailed it down, its a car some of us grew up dreaming of in high school.

This article from InsideLine describes it perfectly vs a modern 997:

"When you change gear, you can feel the cogs engage and hear the cam belts working in the engine. The front wheels kiss the road through the steering made weighty through lots of caster for straight-line stability in this rear-engine package....the 993 will always feel like a special moment in history. The dictates of the modern world mean there can never be another car like it, so it will continue to be hailed as the last classic 911.

The Porsche 997 delivers a very different experience. This is a precision instrument for the PlayStation generation."

So the answer to OP's question seems to be... 10 years from now the PlayStation generation will lust after 997s and will not give a damn about air coolness.

Any wine can turn sour, at a certain point. So what is it's hold over time ? Drink or wait ?
All RLs know that a single line item failure will stop this car and deep pockets are needed to get it back to its previous state, abet with bleeding heart.
Aviation wise I am lucky to fly the latest state of the art plane, and it is still under warranty. Sometimes it is good to have that feeling.
What is the best choice ? 993 or 991 ? Or Honda Civic ?
Wallet and vulnerability are in balance, and to each in their own scale.

Well maybe not that perfect ...lol.

And yes 10-15 years from now maybe the new PS generation will have no appreciation for the air cooled, they will probably be after the GT3s, GT3RS etc.

There are still some great Napa Cabs out there, just not Opus 1 and the like. My favorite is Robert Foley Howell Mountain but even his claret is killer!

Talking about wine. How do you guys drink Zinfandel? It's like getting hit in the face with a cannon. Or driving a Cadillac through a Vienna ballroom if I believe the recent commercials.

The Killer cab for me would be a Caymus based in Napa Valley
Of course it does not compare with the 993 experience

Nothing says life worth living watching the sunset on a breezy porch with a bottle of Charles Shaw

My car is old. It smells like burnt oil at all times. I sweat a lot in it in the summer. It's also slower than a new Honda Accord.

I wouldn't want anything else.

Caymus is overrated. If you must, at least drink the Special Selection
Zinfindels are big wines. The grapes get so ripe in Cali that our wines have high alcohol contents and big fruit flavors. Let the wine breath for an hour or so to cool it off a bit.
I like Martinelli Zins from the Russin River area
