The best street tire package on the 993 was the 16 inch wheels. Lots of meat to protect from pot holes and the car was much more tossable on mountain roads...the whole car was more agile and the ride quality miles ahead of the 17s...and the 18s must turn the car into a truck.

It strikes me that increasing wheel size, like ever increasing horsepower "needs" for many, are substitutes for organ enhancement.

Default Porsche Technical Bulletin on 993 Tires and Wheels

I mean this not sarcastically...authentically asking. If 16 was best and 18 worst, why did the GT2, etc come with 18?

There are multiple variables on how a car rides other than wheel size. For example; tire brands, compounds, etc. This PDF gives a static pressure for each wheel size. All I can assume is this PDF may have been valuable when the 993 was new with OEM equipment, but I think the ship has sailed on that.

Market demands. Same reason the current 991s come with 20" wheels. Most people (whether track guys or those looking at comfort) will tell you that 20" wheels on a 911 is not exactly the best choice in a tire/wheel combo.

The general buying public, new Porsche customer thinks they're "cool" so that's what Porsche puts on the cars.

Default Tire size Question

Why is it that the WB 993 OEM rear tire size is 285x30 while the NB is 265x35. With the fronts both 225x40, it would seem that the 265x35 would be a better "fit" for the rear, in that the sidewall is 2.75mm higher than the front using the 265x35 and 4.50mm shorter using the 285x30. Wouldn't 295x30 be a better "fit" than 285x30?
