Doc,
I'm far from a mechanically inclined fellow so I had my indie do it and it cost me just under $300 for them to install the rod, short shift and new shift tube seals.

The car has 60k on it and I've had it since April, so I gotta assume the were all the OEM parts, so yes, just replacing 14 yr old parts with brand new OEM ones is going to produce an improvement, let alone to stuff from FDM...

I have 75K miles on my 95 coupe ... about 5K ago the "cup" failed on the forward rod. Fortunately I was in 2nd gear ... and limped home avoiding stop signs and lights. Porsche's replacement part was $130, just for one end. This car is my DD so I bit the bullet and installed it. Fast forward ~ 3K miles ... while everything worked I was more sensitive to how "mushy" it felt . I had an opportunity to trade a set of OE mufflers and cash for the GR / SSK about 2K miles ago. The difference ...slighty shorter throw and solid mechanical feel to shifting ... I am happy with the way it feels in my daily commute and look forward to seeing how it feels when I take the car to a DE next spring. While my car is no longer 100% stock I'm very comfortable with the improvement.

Alex,
My cups were trashed, especially the front one, and my car was at 50,000 miles. Love the upgrade in general. The rubber interface at the transmission seemed fine, but this setup is much more direct.
Kiwi01: why are you worried about staying stock? Looks like your suspension has been lowered? My gut tells me it's ok to change the stuff under the skin (200 cell cats, Stage 2 mufflers, SSK/goldenrod, RS engine mounts) and keep the original on my wheelset (996 TT hollowspoke twists) and steering wheel (sweet 3 spoke). Someday in the distant future, I will bring this to car shows with the hopes of brightening someone's day with a 993 that isn't seen out on the roads anymore. This may take quite a while, though. But, I don't plan on winning any concours events.
Just my 0.02.

Brian ... I didn't mean to give the impression that 100% stock was a priority for me only a starting point :-) The changes I have made are an improvement for the way I drive. I don't anticipate selling this car any time soon ... only enjoying it.
For me, the SSK and the GR were an improvement and I am glad I made the changes ... if people are considering modifying their shifting setup this is one of the better options to be considered for the 993.

Should I install the SSK or not?
I have both the Golden Rod and the SSK sitting on my work bench. I was at a PCA event on Sunday and two of the DE guys recommended avoiding the SSK becuase of possible missed shifts. Do any of you have any advice on this?

I had posted this vid on another thread, but thought it'd be pretty appropriate here also. This is when I was making my own RS shift rod. Regarding SSK, these aren't dragsters. You're not shifting so fast that the likelyhood of a missed shift is low.
I had put this vid on FB and in another thread as proof that if you have not purchased the FDM GL, you need to!

I've missed just as many shifts with the stock setup.

The reduction in throw is around 20%
Not a lot...
This is what the Porsche 993 RS has in it...
Nothing too extreme
That said, if this is the FD Motorsports SSK, we would be happy to take it back if you decide to keep the standard 993 shift parts.
If you do stick with the standard shift lever and fed rod, I would highly recommend replacing the nylon cups.
They get brittle and do fail, leaving you stranded.

Had my FDM SSK and Golden Rod installed in my 95 C2. My stock shifter was in good working order but I wanted to add something new, spend some $$. The FDM shifter feels great! It feels very crisp and definitely an improvement from the stock feel. IMO. I have no regrets on this purchase. RRC715.

just installed yesterday, absolutely love the crispness, slightly shorter throw and slightly higher (in my case 993RS) shift ****
In the last 3 weeks I've done SSK, Goldenrod, RS solid motor mounts, Michelin Pilot SuperSport, balance, alignment, Bergvill FX LED interior and trunk, and T-LED US Amber kit, and Classic9Leather front seat covers
I feel like I have a brand new car

Golden Rod
Just installed by Brent Hunter in Mississauga.
LOVE IT!
no SSK Just the rod , and it feels good.
Before it was like wiggling a stick out of mud.
Now it feels Bolt action.
it gates over from 2nd to 3rd nice.

I have my stock set up still in my 993 and I do see where you're coming from Stephen. My 944 from many years ago felt much more precise and solid. I imagine these are completely different mechanisms. The 944 was an '86 the 993 is a '97. Can someone help me understand why an older more entry level P car provided a more robust shifting experience than the 993? Many thanks.
