Question How to put cigarette lighter housing back in?

I made the mistake of taking out the metal cigarette lighter housing in order to investigate what would be involved in changing it from a Porsche-size to a standard-size housing so that I could use it for my GPS.

(I have decided NOT to pursue that idea, because I realized I would then be unable to inflate my spare.)

The problem is that I cannot get the housing inserted back in correctly. The piece that it mates to is on a short wire and can't be pulled out of the hole far enough to work with it. (I can get it to protrude about 1mm or 2mm, but that doesn't help at all.)

The housing shell can only fit in one way due to the alignment of the electrical contacts, so lining it up is not the issue. The problem is there is no way to hold onto on the part that is inside the dashboard once you insert the metal housing shell into the hole.

I must be missing something simple here. What is it???

I am driving with the housing back in the hole so that it looks fine, but the wire is not connected, so I'm screwed if I get a flat.

Thanks in advance,

John

It's been a while but IIRC you'll need to reach behind to get it back together properly. The easiest way to do that is to remove the radio (headunit). There are lots of threads here on how to do that if you don't know how - just be sure you put masking tape on the dash area below the radio so you don't scratch it when you pull the unit out.

Follow this advice. I had the same problem and this is exactly what I did. Worked perfectly.

Thanks very much guys. I had tried removing the radio before posting this question, but couldn't get it out. It's an aftermarket Alpine. Finally gave up after reading your replies, and went to a car audio place on Saturday. He noticed instantly that there was a trim plate surrounding the radio which had to be removed in order to reveal the locking tabs that I had otherwise been unable to find. I hadn't realized the trim plate wasn't a built-in part of the dash. After taking the radio out, replacing the cigarette lighter was a piece of cake. Thanks again for the help.

Does anybody make an adaptor to let you use standard size cigarette lighter plugs (such as GPS or cell phone charger) with the 993 stock cigarette lighter?

I searched this a couple weeks ago and came to nowt - the included escort link failed and I did not want to mess with all my device plugs (sat nav, phone charger etc) so I wired in a new socket. Here are two links, if you search "cigarette socket" etc specific to the 993 forum you will find more. GL and post if you figure it.
