Has anyone here gone from a 997 to a 993 as a daily driver?
If so, pros, cons?
I am SERIOUSLY contemplating it. I really like my 997, but I keep getting drawn to the air-cooled 993 beauty.
I would be using it as a daily driver, about 40 miles per day.
drive one. If after 30 minutes you don't want your 997 back, it may make sense to make this move.
I did...last Thursday. Cant' stop thinking about it. The sound of the engine, the handling, outstanding. Not as responsive as my 997S, but exhilaarting nonetheless. And I LOVE the look of the car.
I sold my 2007 997 and purchased a 95 993 it has been about a year and I would still do it again. I love the size, look and sound of the 993. But the main reason was my concerned about when my warranty ran out, the cost of service. I have owned many 911’s and always enjoyed servicing the car myself, but the 997 was so complicated I was afraid to do anything on the car, even the radio is beyond my knowledge. With the 993 there are many similarities to the earlier cars so I feel comfortable doing any type of service. I like being able to service the 993 that is part of my enjoyment with the car. I do miss the 997’s power, better gas mileage, and a car that is harder to lose control of. But after all is said and done I would still sell the 997 for a 993. (plus I was able to put some cash in the bank with the money I saved on the 993)
I have both.... Very different machines though. 11' Gt3 and 96' C4S....... Both pretty raw in driving, main reason why I love them so much. I think if you prefer creature comfort over more of a rawer drive keep the 997, but if you crave the ride more go with the 993. If this is a dd and you have a lot of traffic and stop and go, keep the 997...... I'm lucky to have both
It takes a few upgrades like a good suspension etc and the 993 will easily be as responsive or even more than the 997 - the car is just much more engaging and visceral.
If you drove it and love it, then your probably on your way to making the switch.
Are you driving in stop/go traffic? Overall this will not be good for a 993.
Being realistic here (and daily driving a 993 for the past 6 years), several questions you will also have to answer:
1. Where do you live & will you need AC? The AC on the 993 is terrible. Whatever cool air (not cold) you get doesn't even hit your face since you can't adjust the center vent far enough.
2. Will you need heat? More than likely, you'll get a blast of burn oil smell from the heater as any oil leak will likely find its way to the heat exchanger.
3. Do you have a strong enough left leg? The clutch and bottom hinged pedals on the 993 can give you quite a workout in rush hour traffic.
4. Does it rain/snow where you live? You will constantly worry about the rear end swapping in wet condition.
5. Is your wallet big enough? For the maintenace, and MORE importantly the upgrades needed for the 993. Off the bat and depending on the car you buy you'll need, suspension upgrades, chip for more power, short shift shifter, and a ton of other stuff that THIS forum will put on you.
