The transmission oil was intended to be changed an an ambient temp of 28 deg C (82.4 deg F) when Porsche published the 3.6 L specification. For every 5 deg C below that 28 C specification your changing your gear oil in (ambient temp) will increase the amount of gear oil required to fill the transmission by .1673 L, for 10 deg below the 28 C ambient it will require .3346 L more than the 3.6 L specification.

BTW, since this was first written I have switched to Motul Gear 300 75W90.

Tens of thousands of miles using this oil and like it a lot.

I found this thread useful, so thought I would add my recent experience....

Last weekend I changed the gear oil in the transaxle. Previous fill was Redline NS, with a small amount of MTL added. This was done by a local indy about 20k miles ago. I can't recall his rationale for adding a small amount of MTL; but, it seemed to make sense at the time. I haven't been having any significant problems, the shifting from first to second had always been a little balky when cold but fine otherwise.

This time I went with the Porsche approved gear oil from the dealer (999.917.546), at $45/litre. My understanding is that this is a Shell product (Spirax?).

The old gear oil looked clean when I drained it, and there was a minimal amount of very fine (powder-like) fuss on the magnetic drain plug. I used a Motive Products 1735 to pump the new gear oil into the transaxle, which only took a few minutes (I highly recommend the Motive Products unit).

I noticed a significant improvement the first time I drove the car. Cold, warm, or hot, the shifting feels a lot smoother. In all fairness, the old gear oil had gone 20k miles, so this is not exactly a fair comparison. Having said that, I don't recall the shifting having ever felt this smooth. IMO, it was well worth the cost to buy the factory approved gear oil.

Since I last commented on this thread, I have had more and more 993 owners come into the shop and switch to the "factory fill" with great results. No one has gone from the factory fill to Delvac in my recent memory. The primary reason seems to be to improve the shifting, especially cold - and the feedback is positive.

I went back to factory fill 2 years ago. I will not change to anything else.

Hi,

I am about to pickup factory fill from my local porsche dealer for a transmission fluid change on 1995 993. (Manual)

It appears the part no has changed. The part no I am getting from the parts department is 000 043 305 49.

Can someone confirm that is the correct fluid?

Thanks!
