Smile Steering Rack - Affordable DIY Project!!

Just ordered a rebuilt steering rack at a great DIY price!
http://www.steeringgearsuperstore.com/
Steering Rack for 993 $269 net of $200 core charge.

Hope this takes some of the $$$ ouch out of a leaking rack fix.

Andy :-)

I need a rack and just went to their site. They seem to show a price of $499 plus another $200 in core charge. What am I missing here, Andy? And also, how was the quality of their rebuild?

I think it's $499 and they give you back $200 when you send them your core. Good price if that's the math.

No, it's not. Try adding one to the cart and it's obvious that it's a $499 rack plus $200 core deposit.

So about the same as carsteering.com and you have at least two owners who have used them as a reference.

It is. I'm just curious how Andy got his two months ago for that little or if it's just a mistake.

I just had my rack seals replaced using the KLA industries seal kit(best kit my mechanics had seen). Cost me $250 with the labour, no more leaks, and my original rack back on the car.

"Strange things are afoot at the Circle K." from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Usually, the core price is added to the quoted price. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Andy, I've seen you (excellent) instructions. Unfortunately, it's cold and I have no place to do this, so it'll be done by a mechanic.

Could you comment on price, please?

Did they replace the seals without taking the rack off the car? If my mechanic does that I'd be pretty happy.

No, the rack has to come out, its a complete seal replacement kit.(I didn't count them, but there are many seals and the kits are model specific) Providing you have little or no wear will be as good as new.

Chris.

Thanks, Chris!

I think for expediency sake I'd go with an already rebuilt rack. The car has 93K miles so I don;t think there's any particular value in my current rack.

Interestingly, my previous 993 had its rack replaced by dealer at 20K miles, about 3 years into its life. Strange, but I've never investigated why.

Mine had 31,000 km, (now 33,000) the rack was in perfect shape only the seals had gone,I changed to PSS 10's so pulled the rack at the same time. I guess my once pampered, twice a month driver, is rebelling against daily use...brakes are next on the list!
