Default OEM Speaker Replacement

I've been looking at the speaker replacement threads. Question. Wtih a HiFi car, if I do not want to replace amp or wiring, are there any speakers that are a direct replacement (no modification) other than oem? I'm only looking at the doors right now, not rear shelf.

I have the exact same question so I'm looking forward to some responses. I got a custom system priced out with very good but not top-end equipement the price was $2800. I thought that was ridiculous. I rarely listen to the radio anyway and I like the period look of the CDR 210 that's in there, plus, I don't actually think is sounds that bad! I've decided I'm just going to replace the speakers (some are completely disintegrated).

I have not done enough homework to know what I can drop in that will match up to the OE speaker wire/connectors, so I hope there's some helpful responses to this thread.

I looked in my file but I didn't keep a record of the speakers I used. I bought a set of main front door speakers from Crutchfield to replace the crappy OEM ones. Drop in fit, no modifications. I have the Hi Fi option.

Looks like there are a number of options that will fit from Crutchfield.

You can buy the OEM Nokia speakers. I found these from Einmalig.com:

Rears (Cab) 964.645.504.0 - $21.84 each

Tweeters 993.645.502.00 01C - $38.79 each

Mids 993.645.503.00 - $18.83 each

Woofers 993.645.501.00 - $35.27 each

Call Ron Birch at Car Audio Innovations in Roseville, Ca. He KNOWS Porsches and can sell you the proper replacement speakers. Caraudioinnovations.com

While I haven't used him for years, I would definitely call him for anything Porsche audio related.

I spent some time this evening in chat mode with crutchfield trying to determine what they have to offer. They tell me all tweeters require some modification to the door to fit. They are suggesting Polk db521 and Polk db401 for the hifi enclosures and tell me they would fit without modification. They also tell me that they are 4 ohm same as oem nokia.

Questions I have. Are the OEM nokia two way speakers? If they are not wouldn't going to a two way Polk Speaker screw things up?

Does any one know the diameter of the mid speaker? I believe the larger speaker is 5 and one quarter.

Thanks for any input. I also plan to call the other company suggested above. Just looking for some feedback along the way as there seems to be a few people interested in achieving the same goal.

Those are good prices. Compare to Pelican.

I haven't cracked open the tweeter, but I'm thinking they may be less prone to disintegration of the cones due to their smaller size vs. the mids and woofers? In listening to my stereo, it's clear that the rears are shot and likely the mids/woofers, but the tweeters sound ok. So if we don't want to cut up the door panel to fit a new tweeter, stick with what you have or replace the tweeter with an OEM one? Just a suggestion.

Not sure about your 2-way questionn?

I just chatted with Crutchfield too...

- They don't have anything that can be used with the factory grilles, so you'd have to use the one that comes with the speaker

- They don't have an option for the tweeters/mids that would not require mods to the door panels

- They recommended the Polk DB521s (grille is hideous) or the Rockford Fosgate 575r152s (grilles are decent). These are 5 1/4s with a built-in tweeter, so you could disconnect the OEM tweeters but leave them in the door. I'm not sure if you'd still use the OEM mids or disconnect them?

- The speaker connections on whatever you choose would not fit the OEM connectors, so you'd either have to cut off the ends of the OEM connectors and replace them, or Crutchfield will send you free a new wiring harness that includes the correct connectors.

I'm not sure about all this, so feedback would be helpful...I'm half-tempted to just replace them with OEM Nokias and be done with it...I don't drive the car to listen to the damn radio anyhow, the flat-6 is my favorite soundtrack!

Just traded a couple of emails back and forth with Rod Birch. He told me that the only way to leave grills, wiring, and amp unmolested is to use oem replacement speakers. He of course encouraged me to get rid of the low quality stuff. I'm however now planning to order oem nokia tomorrow.

Thanks for the feedback on this thread. I'm disappointed that I can't improve the speakers without molesting the oem set up, but pleased that I think I'm certain of the way to go.

Like you all say, what a great place this is!
