Starter Motor Spinning
Starting the engine as I left the gas station today, I heard what sounded like the bendix gear on the starter not engaging and the starter spinning. Question is how long do you think I have before I have to replace the starter? Days, weeks or months?

Hmm, guessing that would be like a lottery.
How many times do you start a car in a week? Its just plain duty cycles on the starter -> so my guess is 27 starts. Its as good as any other guess, perhaps, maybe.
No one can give you an accurate answer here other than "fix it!"
Cheers,
Mike

At least you have some notice. I went to start mine, which had been fine, no issues and it made a terrible noise and basically locked up. It is at the shop now and mechanic says he thinks the starter "jumped the fly wheel" says he needs to get the starter off to see what's up. Wish I had some notice it was going out. Hope it didn't damage flywheel. What are typical costs for replacing a starter (shop time and part)?

Wear in the starter drive pinion/clutch (Bendix/sprag) assembly often shows up when the starter is hot: let it cool down if the car cannot be started , and chances are that the starter will engage ...... otherwise, look for a push or a hill to get a 'jump start'
"Never gets better" is the reality, if the issue repeats itself --- replace as Mike says.

mine did it on & off for about 6 months before i replaced it, but I drive my car once a week or less. Be prepared, that job is a bear. The attached is a "tool" I made from PVC pipes to help guide the wrench into the top bolt. I got the idea from somewhere on the net (maybe here). good luck.
