Default Ideas for updated steering wheel

Every time I get in my car (1997 cab), I just feel the wheel to be so dated, or thin.

I have the original 4 spoke wheel for the car, but my other car has a much fatter sport wheel that I really like. (bmw)

I also would like to add radio controls on the wheel. I looked at a 3 spoke with tiptronic buttons for radio control, but that's not the look I want. I do realize I would have to replace the radio too, which kind of bums me out as I like the simple look of the sort of stock radio (cdr 2 i think??)

Anyone have any good ideas for an updated steering wheel. The wheel must have an airbag as well.

I am thinking along the lines of the RUF wheel pictured in a recent thread...

Try the 996 three spoke wheel. No radio controls, but great looking, feeling wheel.
Get a radio with a remote if you dont want to reach to change the station...
or better yet, listen to the beuitiful flat six music.
When I picked up my current 993, I drove 2200 miles with no radio (blown fuse inside of radio) accross the country. Never missed it....

I bought a nice 996 3-spoke wheel for my 993. I like it very much and it looks period correct, and it has an airbag, of course.

carsdream in poland my friend. your wheel will come back, looking period correct, with fresh flat black leather goodness. i had mine thickened by the smallest amount. it matches the OE airbag perfect... the picture is over exposed...

if your reading this thread and you havent done this yet then you need to!!

my old 3 spoke was in fantastic condition, but it was worn in, its leather shiny, smoothed out and hardened. Over time it became a stark contrast to the matte leather of the airbag.

The "new" wheel has a supple, matte finish. I had them thicken the wheel the smallest amount possible. End result feels as great as it looks. It matches the airbag perfectly now. Cant thank this community enough for their crazy ideas and whoever found this place in poland.

Dealing with Carsdream was awesome. They were very accommodating and responsive. esp sending me the wheel first and then taking my wheel afterwards. The quality and craftsmanship far exceed my expectations and my experience with my last OE BMW Performance wheel. FedEx shipping to poland was just under $90. The post office was $60 but i figured the extra $20 spent would assure it got there and i would get my core deposit back.

Doing the swap literally took 15 minutes once the battery was disconnected. (thanks to the many posts on rennlist). Use cation making sure the clock spring male 'pointer' is free of the wheel as you remove the wheel, its in the 12 ock position, you'll see it when you take the airbag off.

Others on here have had their 4 spoke wheels thickened and recovered as well with impressive results. That might be something to think about for the winter months. Not sure what the turn around time is to Poland. Also picking up a well worn 4 spoker and having that recovered will reduce downtime for the change over and preserve the original wheel.

they will ship you a reconditioned wheel first, then you ship your core back...

yes, just email them and pay upfront. they will hold a sizable core deposit. you'll get a perfect wheel, in a few weeks, then i fedex'd my core back to them and got my deposit back within a week.

I like that redone 4 spoke. Looks up to date, and price seems pretty reasonable, especially over a new wheel and airbag. the 996 wheel looks good also. Does it fit without modification?

My cab is triple black.
