Default 993 Speedline " Daytona" Style Wheels for a NB

I bought a set of 3 pc. Speedline wheels from another rennlister. They are 8 & 10 X 18. I sent then to Al Reed to have a weld inspected and had them checked for straightness. I was told the weld was fine. 1 was ok. 3 were straightened by Al.

The plan was to disassemble, polish the lips and reassemble. During that process I weighed them.

They are heavier than MY 2002 five spokes. As I just can't get over the weight issue, I guess is should consider selling them.

Anybody interested?

Gerry

Gerry, no offense intended, but we will need some more details... photos, offsets, price, etc. If you don't know the offsets, I can help you ascertain what they may be by going off of some measurements and/or photos. I think I may have actually tried to purchase this same set of wheels and barely missed out.

Is the weight difference significant? An interesting aspect of the much-debated wheel weight issue is that tires, as well, vary in their weights--yet few seem to take notice. For instance, a Michelin Pilot Super Sport in 225/40R18 is 22 lbs, whereas a Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec in the same size is 25 lbs. Food for thought.

Mark, I've actually been thinking about the tire weight a lot. But... unlike wheels, there are very few suitable tires for track and even fewer for autocross. So the tire weight issue becomes very secondary.

I mean... if you want to win an autocross it's purple crack of an A6 and nothing else. No matter the weight.

That's definitely a valid point; it's not so much a personal concern but rather something that is often overlooked (especially when you consider all of the kerfuffle over wheel weights). The quality of tire should take precedence over weight, but if the tires one is comparing are similar in characteristics, I would encourage folks to look at the weights for another variable.

I am a bit of a wheel junkie, so a couple of pounds on the wheels is not a dealbreaker. Depends on usage and how heavy we are talking, though.

Agree, Mark.

Interestingly, I think this wheel weigh concern only came about 10-12 years ago. There was never any mention or any deep thought regarding wheel weight for street wheels all through the 90s, I believe. I started seriously autocrossing in 2000 and don't recall any real conversations on this topic back then. I still think that for a street car... well... it doesn't matter all that much.

Thanks for the replies and interest on selling the wheels. I am lucky enough to be within driving distance of Jim Dorociak. I called him and went over to see him yesterday. He was kind enough to take time out of his busy day to entertain my questions and concerns.

After a long converation, I have decided to keep the wheels. Jim is a fountain of knowledge and information and all around class guy. We are lucky to have him around. The quality of his work is second to none.

Thanks to all for the interest!

I fell in love with these wheels when I saw your car, Ryan. The charcoal looks magical against the Polar Silver.

Ryan, when I was up to see Jim he showed me wheel center that I believe he said was painted stahlgrau / steel gray 61 W. He said he pinted your wheels that same color. The center Jim showed me looked to me to be a much darker color gray almost what I would consider a charcoal than what looks like you have on your car. It was hard to believe it was the same color.

The only thing I can think that would allow for such a color difference is that some of the photo's were taken with a film camera as opposed to a digital camera. I do know that brands of film could cause minor color shifts. Do you think that is possible? Please cofirm your color.

If you have some other pictures l would be interested in seeing them. I will send you a PM with my e-amil address.

I have to admit seeing pictures of the Speedline wheels on your car was a contributing factor in keeping the wheels.
