This is my 1st 911 -- how many people run with the top down without the tonneau cover on... does it hurt the top...

I never run the top down w/o the tonneau. Some say if you run the windscreen, it is ok, but I'd rather not chance it.
That said, having a powertop is useless if you have to get out and put the tonneau on, so most of us here have disconnected the power top and run manually. This saves wear and tear on the motors and also prevents binding problems. Cab top repairs can be expensive. It is a pretty easy conversion.

My car didnt come with a boot cover and i was concerned with the headliner flapping all over the place at even moderate speeds...no way this doesnt speed up the wear and tear on the top if you do this all the time. I got a new boot cover from World Upholstery & Trim and now use it every time the top is down.
I am thinking about doing the manual coversion too...

Use the cover, it looks better and protects the top. Manual operation is the way to go. Also put soft towel, small pillow, etc; between the plastic window when folded. It helps keep the inevitable scratching to a minimum.

Mine had a new top when I purchased it. I thought the windscreen which zipped into the liner, would protect it from damage. Not so, the liner is separating from the top. I bought a brand new boot cover and I use it every time the top is done now.

I never aware this problem until I read this post. My tonneau still sitting in my storage since I bought my 993. Its hard to always have it on in Hong Kong even I want to. Any work around?

I agree with everyone and my top operates manually. And for long trips by all means I use the cover. For shorter trips my work around is a couple of small plastic spring clips. I clip the front of the folded top to keep it from flapping around. Works well and takes a few seconds to place both clips. Just my 2 cents.

well, I have had my cab for 5 years, and I rarely use the tonneau, but I have never gone over 75 or so with the top down. Just no chance to do it in local travel. Longer trips are generally more comfy with top up for me. Anyway, the top is fine. If you are going to drive at high speed, or if you park the car under trees where the debris will drop into the car, I would use the tonneau.
