Default Driving Experience 87' 911 vs 993

will someone who has driven and/or owned both explain to me the difference in driving experience between these these automobiles. If there are any other major differences that a novice might overlook please point them out. Thanks a bunch.

Do a search - there are numerous threads/discussions about it.

Ray Calvo lives on!!

(search him too if you do not get it.. )

Cheers,

Mike

Best to just drive several of each. As Mike says, a search will bring up discussions to keep you busy until your head explodes.

What I CAN say, having a torsion bar car around again (albeit heavily modified yet still perfectly streetable), and my 4S that's I'm using here-and-there after mothballing it for basically all of this year, is that the cars are so different............yet so similar. And that is of zero help to you.

993: more power, slightly better handling, more suited to 2K + mile road trips or DD

'87: slightly less maintenance and tire cost; G50 transmission is a must

Not much in it, most depends on your usage.

Plenty of threads on this subject. You will read that the 87 is more "raw" and 993 is more refined. In a comparison I prefer the 993 because it has alot of the same things that make an 87 what it is, plus more. Certainly for a DD the 993 is mucho better.

I have owned both ... see my signature for details
I miss the raw driving experience of the 911 ... a more pure connection between man and machine.
The 993 is a great daily driver that has more power and comfort ... yet something is missing perhaps?

Ok, fine, lets discuss it again.

I have had both a 83SC and a few 993s.

I move to the 993 because I wanted something more civilized. Much more power (I had a 96 and now a TT), great transmission with 6 speeds, a A/C system that actually works, the same fit/finish, quieter ride and more supple tracking which results in handling pitchy roads better. The 993 is a prettier car, no weird baffles or rubberwork hiding awkward bumpers. The lines are better on the 993.

I have no regrets and do not want to go back to pre 993. I do not think anything is missing, and in fact things were added that you will miss on an older 911.

Cheers,

Mike
