Default 993 Transmission Weirdness

I own a 993 1995 911 which has always run perfectly. The other day I jumped in the car, started it and tried to back out of my garage. It's like something changed overnight.

When I try to put the car in reverse... the shift lever bangs against the console and it nearly takes both hands to get it into reverse. All forward gears are fine.
There's no grinding or anything... it's just a bear to push it to the left.

I cannot figure out what has happened. Has anyone else experienced this... or maybe someone can tell me what wrong? Sure would be appreciated.

Thanks for any input...

Buzz

I suggest you post this to the 993 Forum for much better response. This is for 911's.

Here's a diagram of the entire assembly I 'borrowed' from FD Motorsports website that folks can use for reference (thanks guys!)

Hey, thanks for doing this. I can get a much better mental image of exactly how much trouble I'm in . My son (his 993 looks exactly like mine) says he thinks it's a bushing that we can replace. We do all of our own maintenance but never dug into anything like this. I may fall back on the old "drive it!" repair. Hah.
1st gear is farther left than it used to be too. The shift lever is now moving the center console to the left... and when I put it in first... it's now hitting the console also. Maybe I shouldn't drive it?

Thanks again,

Buzz

Sounds like a linkage problem.

Not to difficult to fix, easier to do if you have a lift as you need to remove the long trans tunnel cover underneath. Once that is off you will have a full view and the issue should be pretty obvious.

Yes .. I got a good look at mine when FDM put in my goldenrod and short shift kit .. it's actually pretty simple stuff. There's a very nice DIY step by step procedure on the FDM website that might help you as well. Just scroll to the bottom and click on the 'download the installation document' PDF link and print it out.

You guys are great. I guess my son was right when he said we could do it ourselves. I do have access to a lift. Thanks also for the DIY stuff...I'll go there now. I'll let you know what we find.

All the best,

Buzz

P.S. I think what is confusing some people here is the photo in my avatar. That's my '05 997. I killed it totally. Going through an "S" turn at 160mph and dropped a wheel off the pavement. In any other car I would have been killed. I was unconscious for an hour... I literally walked out of the E room with a shattered elbow.
