Default Shifting up

I recently learned that it's a good idea to run a Porsche harder than other cars so exhaust gunk doesn't build up. I was told that every week or so, I should take it up to 6000 rpm. Which got me thinking: I normally shift at 3000, but on my 993 (my first Porsche), should I be shifting more like at 4000?

What do you shift up at ?

Thanks!

Yep, work it.

Change oil.

Maintain.

She'll love you for it.

Every week or so?!? I do that every drive or so!

Shift points depend on which gears you're shifting between and how hard you're accellerating (among other things like are you in the middle of a corner). I probably shift above 4k most of the time. I don't often hit redline, but I do go above 5k pretty regularly.

Drive it like ya stole it! Well, be safe, but enjoy the driving experience to the degree you feel comfortable with your skills.

This is all BS. There's nothing about a 993 engine that benefits more than other street car engines from high-RPM use, shifting at 4K vs 3K, etc. Drive your car however you want to drive it.

Where I shift will often depends on whether I will have to accelerate or just coast in the next gear.

If shifting from 1st-2nd or 2-3rd and knowing that I will still have to accelerate in the new gear, then I'll rev it a bit higher. This so I the rpm doesn't drop too low and I lug the car trying to accelerate.

If shifting from 4th to 5th once I am already at or near cruising speed, then I just upshift without paying too much attention to rpm since I'll just be maintaining speed or cruising. Not much demand from the engine in the next gear.

more RPM = more heat = more ware.

But life is short, must have fun!

thank you.

drive it however you want.

If you want to rev it out, feel free to do so, but do it for enjoyment, not any perceived benefit to your engine.

Add me to the "nothing special about the 993" list.... But even my SUV I wind it to redline every so often (uphill freeway entrance is a good opritunity), just because…

3k is lugging it. I keep the revs under 3k during warm up. I usually shift at 4k+ as I love the sound of the engine at 4k. I regularly rev to over 5 and sometimes to redline.

It may not make a difference to engine life, but it just sounds and feels so good.

easy solution...just put a set of Fister Stage lll's on the car. Up shifts at 4-5K RPM are thus guaranteed, as well as perfect downshift throttle blips.

The occasional red line run will be even more exciting.

GI love winding it out through the gears taking on ramps. . Always makes me smile. If someone tells me its food for the engine, I'll believe it just to make me feel even better.

I like to take it up to 6500rpm at least once every time I take it out. It gets my adrenalin going if nothing else. I did lug it a bit driving through the Redwoods last month.
