AC compressor whine/whisle
Just returned from our 2 week sojourn thru the Maritimes in the '95 and had a great trip. The car worked perfectly, drove thru some of the thickest fog I have ever seen in the mountains east of Quebec City, and some of the heaviest rain ever, south of Edmunston NB. But the car was solid on the road! Must have been all her wedding attire stuffed into the car...ballast, hahaa.
Anyway, got home this afternoon and have a question for the forum. I did a search and read/re-read Brian's 'complete 993 AC troubleshooting post' but didn't find an answer to my query there...
The AC compressor cycles on and off when in 'normal' mode which I assume is 'normal'. However when the compressor is 'on' ( which can be clearly determined by the very slight reduction in engine output but mostly by the aural clue as the electric clutch engages...), there is a kind of whistling noise, like a bearing(?) in the the clutch possibly, going bad. It has been getting slowly worse as the trip went on. The output in the cockpit is consistently cold, ( thank god! ), but the noise is distracting at the slower speeds, like in city traffic.
I assume I could buy a new electric clutch with the bearing installed and replace the clutch/bearing assembly myself, but before I do that I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience?
The view from the engine compartment seems normal, all belts are looking good with proper tension...
Jim
