95 993 C2 Rear bearing replacement. Stuck Cannot get hub back on
Been doing a rear bearing job on my 95' 993. Was going pretty well. I had to repack/boot my CV joint. Got through that. Have the axle back in the car but cannot get the hub back on. The freezer trick did nothing for me. tried get it started with a hammer and socket but no love their either. and now the inner race moves forward back slightly on the bearing. Hoping I didn't screw up the bearing. The bearing seems to be normal when I'm not pushing on it with the hub. I think while typing this I just realized what I did wrong. I think I needed to use the bearing tool and press the hub in BEFORE re-installing the rear axle.. Can anyone confirm. Also did I kill my new bearing?

Brain fart and lack of sleep. Just re-read the P-Car write up for rear bearings where Jeff clearly states that the axle is installed AFTER the hub. OOPS. and I thought things were going so well... lol So I guess the only remaining question is did I kill my bearing? I have one at Porsche parts available locally for $30 more than re-ordering and waiting, but I don't want to buy one unless I need it.

The bearing should be fine, the one I got from Porsche once had the inner part of the race a little loose, checked it with the service tech and they said it would be perfectly fine, and has been for quite a while.

Another question since I'm removing the axle again. The large drum portion of the real axle that rides against the inside of the bearing and inside the carrier (where the speed sensor/abs? sensor is) is this inner portion of the carrier and sensor supposed to be packed in grease? When I removed mine there was a large amount of grease in there (that I removed) but my CV boot failed and my original bearing. I assume this grease came from the bad bearing. there was grease everywhere back there... Is this inside the rear bearing carrier area supposed to be repacked with grease?
I see no mention of repacking grease in this area anywhere. Which led me to believe it should be clean.
