Oil filters
Car is being serviced next week, and i wondered if anyone had a preference as to which oil filters to use. I know Porsche used to supply German made mahle oil filter but now supply usa made filters which some suggest are inferior quality wise to those originally used.
If the above is true it would seem to make my decision easy but I have also read that the mahle filters caused issues on 993 tt's a few years ago by allowing oil to flow back into the turbo's on shutdown and you should only use Porsche supplied OE filters on this model. My car is an NA but if it caused an issue on the turbo's and the OE filters was recommended is the situation the same for the NA's?

Cheers for the input, my local specialist will be doing the service (just for the stamp in the book really). Im not trying to save money i just want the best filters for my car and have noticed a lot of parts i have bought from Porsche recently have been inferior quality to the ones i took off!
I am just a little concered with the whole issue surrounding mahles use on turbo's as even though i have an NA it would suggest the check valve does not seal correctly.

best oil filter for your carrera is the porsche filter, especially the small one.
Porsche issued a TSB on this issue, and the TSB was destined for turbo AND carrera.
The filter issue was not the fact that it was allowing oil back, but the contrary. It kept the post oil in the galleys pressurized.

here is the TSB

interesting thanks for that, i would assume when that tsb was released mahle were the OE filter supplier to porsche so would it be fair to assume that 993 107 203 02 would have been a redesigned mahle filter at the time, and by that logic the current OEM available mahle filters should be ok?
FWIW, my indy shop uses Mahle filters on the 993/993TT without issues. I've used the Mahle filters on my Turbo the past 2 years without issues. With that said, I just had my oil changed last week, and insisted on the Porsche filters, and will continue to do so in the future.

Stand corrected. Large filter was Mahle/Knecht and small was Mann (from Autohaus AZ). Last ones I used from Sunset were packaged in Porsche boxes - did not look to see if they were stamped with Mann.
EDIT: Also, while on the subject, there was a thread that talked about smoking on startup. Someone suggested that an oil filter bypass update was done on the OE the filters that prevented it from happening. It may only be for the Turbo that that is important. Anyway, I started my car after it was sitting for a bit and it smoked.

My opinion is that there is only one feature on an oil filter that matters. Some filters have a valve that keeps the oil filter full of oil when the engine is off. You can see the valve by looking into the filter from the bottom. I believe the valve helps the system flows oil immediately at startup. If your oil filter is oriented vertically and screws in from below I am not sure the valve does anything for you. Other than this my opinion is the cheaper the better. One that comes free when you buy oil on special is best. Look at the filter you buy and make sure the screw on interface is clean and bright. Some filters form rust in the box on the store shelf and I would not want to put one of these on my 993.
