Default Steering Rack Options

My steering box dumped all its fluids on my driveway over the weekend so I am looking to fix it. The Porsche rack is over $4,000 from Pelican, a ZF rebuild is $1,366.25 and a rebuild by Atlantic Enterprises is $356.50 with a life time warranty. Does anyone have any experience with Atlantic Enterprises?

You can buy the seal kit and do the rebuild yourself for about $75 plus your time (a few hours)

No experience with Atlantic, but I opted for a rebuilt one from an outfit in Chicago (forget the name). I would be surprised if the ZF rebuild (or Porsche) is any better quality than most other rebuilt one. And even if I'm wrong, with the cost of labor, you can replace it once or twice and still be even or ahead of the game. I did a DIY and I would have to replace the damn thing a half dozen times before it caught up to the price of the rebuilt ZF....

Just a follow up. I ordered the ZF rebuild through Pelican. They called back and said they did not have it in stock, their suppliers did not have it in stock and that ZF and Porsche were having a tiff so ZF would not be rebuilding them in the near future. I found some online but they are not easy to find.

good warranty, used successfully on many mercedes cars. I'd give them a chance.

I had mine done about three weeks ago. AES in San Diego did the rebuild. It was around $400 with a lifetime warranty. I have used a number of their rebuilt alternators and starters and have found them to be very good. This is the first steering rack, so far it is working great. I don't have the number with me but AES is located on Twain Street and is mainly a mail order business. I will second that replacing the steering rack is a royal pita. Best money I ever spent to have it done. Good luck. Phil

Swapping the steering rack is really easy. Some DIYs posted in various places make it much more difficult than it needs to be. The trick is to leave the tie rods attached the car and disconnect them from the rack itself. A 2 hour job working slowly.

Cheers,
Joe
