Definitely agreed here. The oil brand is much a lesser importance (unless it doesn't have the proper zddp additives) than the weight based upon ambient temperature.

I am surprised many people blindly say to put in 20w50, even though the poster is located somewhere way up north.

Porsche recommends Mobil 1 0W-40 for all US cars from 1984-onward. This is from the latest oil TSB. Porsche puts these out every year or two.

IMO the owner's manual should be ignored WRT oil recommendations. The recommendations are 13-17 years old now, and oil formulations have advanced eons since the manuals were written.

Thanks for responses to my posts. Because of the amount of oil in the car, I take it to my guru - he has some cool pumper gadget he gets the old oil with. I trust his judgement because of his history with Porsche behind the wheel and the wrench. I am not positive of the weight...but it is M1. Next time I see him, though, I am definitely going to ask about the other oil in this thread.

Dave,

Many of the 993 experts here on this board and elsewhere advise against 0-40.

OEM factory fill is based on best price on the RFQ nothing else. I work for one of the majors.
From what I have read on this board and others - brand does matter inasfar as the zddp levels. Mobil1 vtwin and brad Penn seem to be the standard bearers for these cars. Brad Penn is not a synthetic which is why I chose to run Mobil 1.

Ha! yes i am wayyy up north but it still gets damn hot and humid here in the summer months. I am worried about the light viscosity oil in a higher mileage engine. My mechanic who has years of Porsche racing and rebuilding experience around the globe swears by 20W50. I work in the oil industry (downstream) and I have seen first hand the mess low viscosity full syn oil makes in older higher mileage engines especially the new GF5 formulations.

Dino oil 20W50 with higher ZDDP is the way i have decided to go.

To each his own. Thanks for all the great input thus far.....

Dave, you should see the pitted camshafts on my 70K mile 928 from using the latest TSB Porsche recommendation for 0-40 weight. That cost me 3 grand.
Thanks, but no thanks. 15-50 here. Older engines like ours demand it.

I have always trusted my oil changes to Penn Grade 1 oils.

Just be wary that due to high concentrations Zinc Dialkyldithiophosphate, extended periods of use can result in premature catalytic converter failure.

I usually run one cycle of Penn and one cycle of standard M1, rotating with each oil change.

How often do you plan on changing the oil? Why pick a product that degrades with use (dino) over one that doesn't (synthetic) and which Porsche recommends?

I'm getting ready to do a switcharoo for both my P-cars with this:
http://www.royalpurple.com/product-c...!hps-motor-oil

I did a test run on my old Mercedes and the engine with 210K on the clock purrs like a kitten. She really liked that oil...

It ticks ALL the boxes that we are looking for. No sure why one would use anything less than pure synthetics, but I guess that is a different story. I'm just happy I dont have to go the Brad Penn and the like road.

Having said that I have always been very pleased with the M1 15-50 and it has never failed me.

The weights I plan using the HPS:
Winter: 10-40 for my 928 (daily Driver)- Summer 20-50
20-50 for the 993

And I agree I was only pointing out to Bonster that what is in the owner's manual is not what Porsche recommends anymore.

I'm not sure I agree with these statements. We've seen enough data on oil the last few years to show that there IS a difference between brands.

I do believe OEM fill at a US auto maker is low bidder, but that doesn't mean it holds true at Porsche or other makers higher in the food chain,
