Default FS - Varioram Intake Manifold - $450

I purchased this VRAM in anticipation of buying and converting a second 1995 993, but I bought an already equipped 1997 instead. Given that you will need additional parts to complete the conversion, I've tried to keep the price low. $450 plus shipping.

A VRAM conversion DIY can be found in the link in my sig. I've found it to be a very worthwhile upgrade for my 95 993.

Cheers,
Joe

I actually have a technical question for once. If you put this on an OBDI non-varioram engine what happens? Does it provide the same mid-range torque benefits and hp increase all by itself or do you have to modify the ECU etc. AND will this mod cure the non-varioram idle drop problems associated with the RS clutch and LWF? Forgive me if this is a re-hash .. and TIA :-P

Hey Jon,

You've got to chip the ECU to operate the Varioram (or VRAM ) on an OBD-1 car. The details are all in the DIY link in my sig. The chip which is essentially a copy of the OBD-1 chip for 96-98 ROW cars can be sourced from Steve Wong or Steve Weiner. It's my opinion that the ROW chip has provision for a LWF and therefore will resist stalling issues associated with that mod. This is just my opinion, but I've had no such issues with my 95. FWIW, note that the RSR cars for which the LWF was designed were OBD-1.

Cheers,
Joe

I've put one in my 95. Remember the kick in the pant acceleration as the rev passes 4000rpm? With the vram, you get that kick at 3000 rpm. It makes driving around in the city every nice with all the torque down low.

I've been wanting to do this to the 95 for a while!!! How bad would be it be to ship? I'm totally interested!

Besides the chip, what else do I need to buy?

Hi Mike,

Not bad. I'd estimate $50-$60 to Seattle from the bay area. Take a look at the pics in the link in my sig, you will need to various vacuum lines, oil breather lines, a vacuum tank, and the bracket that secures to lines to the manifold. Some of stuff you'll need can be taken from your plastic manifold.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,
Joe

Thanks Joe. Seems like the best of both worlds then .. none of the OBDII smog issues with all of the advantages of Varioram. Have you experienced any problems of note since you did the conversion? What were the additional costs to buy all the hoses and lines to get it properly connected? Did you source those from Porsche or used someplace?

Yes .. I think it's quite an improvement for street driving .. JMO of course. For a couple of months I had my '95 Coupe and the '98 Cabriolet together and was able to drive them back to back several times and the difference between the two systems and the way they each manage torque through the RPM range is VERY noticeable .. the '95 was very much like my '72 911E with mechanical injection with a big punch between 3500 and 4500 .. the '98 seemed to put that punch back a gear and down 500 RPM and spread it over a bigger range of two gears and another 500 RPM at the top .. AND make it all accessible from the higher gear without having to shift down. I really like it .. I'm surprised more people don't do this mod that drive strictly on the street ...
