Had mine evaluated after taking delivery. Local glass guy said all the "upright" windshields chip like crazy, even higher up models like the Toyota FJ Cruiser. Once the rock is airborne, it won't deflect as well off a near perpendicular hit. I'm waiting for a significant crack before I proceed. His estimate was somewhere around $650 for non OEM. (FYI: this was Safelite--you know you're doing the jingle right now...)

Except insurance companies are cheap and our windshields aren't...I only managed to get about half of mine covered. Better than nothing though I guess..

I could use a new "lens". What are the odds of a group buy?

Make sure that when you guys replace the windshield, you protect it with clearplex. Great product.

Had a friend in the glass business - he said the German glass is made soft on purpose due to TUV regulations. My BMW had the same issues with pitting. Replacement non-OEM Safelite windshield in the Bimmer is doing significantly better about mot pitting.

Non-German glass is a lot more pit-resistant and much cheaper, but you give up the windshield antenna.
There ought to be a solution to an alternative antenna besides a hole in the fender.

That said, I'm going to try to polish the pits out of the glass.
I doubt it will work, but I'm at the point of installing new glass anyway, so I'm going to experiment.

You can actually buy special glass polishing compound and buffer pads for polishing machines. Paying someone to polish the windscreen is probably more expensive than replacing it :/

Lake Country use to sell a kit that a lot of people liked but for some reason it has not been available for over a year now...in any case you need a dual action polisher...it will not address chips or nicks...poking around reviews of everything else seem to indicate the kits where worthless. FWIW Sunset sell OEM windshields for under $800...of course plus shipping and then install.

Priced last month, and I believe they're up to $930 now before shipping.

It works the same way in our state. I got my free OEM windshield last year in place of my badly pitted one after a "giant rock" hit it.

A new clear windshield makes a huge difference with both visibility and the elimination of squeaks.

Beg to differ. Replaced my glass a few months ago, and I have better than 20-20 eyesight, and it was indeed a safety hazard. With 130K the glass was pitted and sandblasted to hell, plus lots of fine scratches in a windshield-wiper pattern. Wipers didn't clear the glass very well anymore, and driving into the sun, especially in the rain, was absolutely dangerous. Imagine hundreds and hundreds of tiny pits and scratches all refracting the sun as you look through the glass. Not fun.

1. clay your glass
2. tape off rubber trim...meguiar's 105 compound ...then meguiar's 205 polish w da buffer

will separate what are true pits...imo, does seem to help w minor scratches

then decide if can live w or replace
