New to 993 mods. Advice please.
Hi everyone. I have a 97 993 Cab 3.6L NA. What mods and suppliers do you recommend?? The car is completely stock and I'd like to make the car more powerful, better handling, SSK, etc... I've done some reading on this forum and it seems to be that there are a lot of knowledgeable members here. I'm new to the idea of performance upgrades to my 993 and would appreciate some knowledge, experience, help etc... Thanks!

How much money do you want to spend?
The question is very open ended.
Engine mods for more power are usually $$$,
Most people do suspension and nicer sounding mufflers, wheels and maintenance. Some internal upgrades, seats, stereos, HID's etc. Most do not touch the internals of the engines, then be prepared to spend thousands more.
If you can give us an idea of your interests, then I am sure you will get plenty of suggestions on how to spend your moola! You want to just go fast? Sound fast? Track? City? Daily drive? Weekender? Track only car?
Get the idea?
Cheers,
Mike
PS Post pictures - it helps!!

Mike is right on and one of this forum's experts! but new suspension has to be the number one mod. huge improvement and the stock set up is tired by now on any 993. have fun on the slippery slope and welcome to the 993 world - yes pics are mandatory!!!

Short shift kit as well!
I agree with
- suspension - coilovers, control arm bushings etc
- Tires - any tire over 4-5 years old needs to be replaced!! and makes a huge difference
- HIDs - you need to see and look more modern
- Stereo - depending on what you need.. I wanted BT
- Maintenance - keep her running forever
phil.

Like others have said, suspension. If you want to spend a bit but have great adjustability get the PSS10 or KW3 from Fister. Otherwise, the HR springs and some stiffer dampers will work too.
Fister II or III's make a great sound
SSK and or Goldenrod is nice too.
I have the RS flywheel (lighter) and clutch which is a fantastic upgrade but $$ unless you can DIY.
You can go from 0-100 on the mod slope and end up with a much better car...it just depends on what you are willing to pay. The great thing about 993s is that if you do nothing, you still have a fantastic car that you will always enjoy.
Pictures required, and congrats on you new ride!

If I were starting over (assuming a weekend driver)
In order of precedence...
Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance. At this age I would replace all wear items. It amazing how the simple tings add up to degrade the overall experience...To get you started:
Ignition: Caps, Plugs, Wires, Distributor belt
Fuel: Fuel Filter, clean/replace injectors
Emissions: Replace o2 sensor, check the SAI manifold for leaks, disassemble/clean the whole intake system, replace any aged/cracked hoses
Suspension: tie rods, wheel bearings, bushings
General: Replace the ground strap on the battery, replace the DME relay (and keep a spare)
Wheels/Tires: Pick your favorite 18 wheels (MY02 are a very good cheap option ) and good summer tires.
Suspension: Lots of options, but car needs to be lowered a little (not too much though). Bilstein HD with ROW MO30 springs would be my pick for a weekend driver.
Lightweight flywheel/clutch: Really only one option here, Factory RS.
Stiffer motor/transmission mounts (if you aren't too finicky about noise)
Appearance: For a cab I would not add a wing, Stick with subtle splitters and rockers.
Sound: A good set of mufflers will only get you a few HP on a real dyno but will add 20-30hp to the butt dyno. After listening to Andreas' car I don't think you can go wrong with the Fister things (or whatever they are called)
Start loosing weight:
Supplemental defroster blower (the one on the left of the engine)
Seats: Stock ones are very heavy (>40lbs each)
Finally the best "mod" of all: Go do a drivers ED event. Its amazing how much better the car feels day-to-day when you give it the proper inputs and have confidence in your abilities.

Your local chapter of PCA is always a good. If you are in NJ (looking at your profile) that would be Jersey Shore region: www.jsrpca.com . Even if you are not a member you can still attend, albeit at a higher price.
BMW club also puts on great events
Then there are the for-profit groups:
NASA: www.nasaproracing.com
Chin Motorsports: www.chinmotorsports.com
Trackmasters: www.trackmasters.com

I have a 97 cab as well. Welcome.
Definitely do the maintenance.
- Convert the top to manual operation to forego a potentially expensive fix.
- Lower the car to ROW or lower is a must. The cars just do not look right otherwise. I have HD and M030 springs. Other options are out there.
- Wheels is a popular upgrade, but I like the ride and looks of the stock Cup2s.
- Mine came with a strut bar, so not sure how it affected the handling.
- HIDs are great to have.
- Muffler upgrade is a great mod. Fister Stage II or III are the current favorites.
- I have RS engine mounts, but jury is still out on whether it was a good mod or not.
- Stereo upgrade with iPod adapter. I have CDR220 so it is a stock head unit.
- Motorsound intake is inexpensive upgrade.
